WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon's manpower chief made the Obama administration's latest long-shot pitch Tuesday to revive faltering legislation to legalize young immigrants who came to the country illegally.
Clifford Stanley, the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, called the measure, known as the Dream Act, a "commonsense" and "obvious" way to attract more high-quality recruits to the armed forces. It faces long odds in Congress, where most Republicans and a handful of Democrats are likely to band together to block it from advancing in a test-vote expected Wednesday.
The legislation would give hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants brought to the United States before the age of 16, and who have been here for five years and graduated from high school or gained an equivalency degree, a chance to gain legal status if they joined the military or attended college.
"They're actually doing very well in our schools, many of them. They're high quality," Stanley told reporters in a conference call. "As we look at our force now for the future, bringing in talented people in this cyclical nature of how our recruiting business goes is significant."

Your logic 'astounds' me!
However, I have no problem with an immigrant, illegal or otherwise, upon completion of a three years service, pass basic security clearances and who can pass the citizenship test being granted citizenship.

I would rather they be in some sort of ‘legal status’ and if they were to go through the same specs as citizens, in regards to records, drug use etc and do ALL their obligated service (in my day it was 6 yrs obligation, no matter how long you were active) on active duty, then allow them on the fast track to citizenship. JUST the individual, not their family etc.
The main thing though it can’t be a dumping ground for criminals and other low lifes.
The non-Roman soldiers became a mainstay of the legions when there simply weren’t enough Romans around to do the work. (That sounds familiar)
But they became very good mercenary soldiers for the most part, until the Visigoths under Alaric decided in 408 AD they didn’t need a middleman (Roman army) between them and the treasury and goodies.
On a more modern note, the Sikhs of India became some of the fiercest and most loyal of Britains foreign mercenaries incorporated as ethnic units into the British army from 1857 to this century.
Other mercenary units that have served with distinction are The White Company of Irishmen who served in Europe and of course, the Pope’s Swiss Guards.
And I’d also add the Hmong who served with our US forces in Viet Nam and Laos with distinction.
Ping!
While I don’t agree with the theory of letting illegals into the military to obtain citizenship, I do not see that as the greatest problem.
If I am not mistaken the dream act would make these illegals legal, and then would allow them to make their family legal, and allow them to bring in their cousins, and in laws , and half of Mexico , and make them all legal.
That is the real clinker.
WHAT FOOLS!
This is absolutely dangerous. Clifford Stanley’s backgroun needs to be investigated.
NO!
I always say the same thing. Pity more people don't bother to learn history.
Oh wait, it'll be different this time. </s>
As it is I barely recognize it now and I only go back as far as the 70s I can only imagine what members of the WWII generation must think.
Back in the 60s, the Germans thought bringing Turks into their booming economy to do the jobs good Germans wouldn’t do would have no consequences.
After all, the Muslims, like the barbarians, would have no interest in staying in their host country full of better jobs and comparative wealth, would they?
For a modern reference point in our country, google ‘Reconquista’ and see what comes up.
