The 13 months unemployment. As Rush pointed out, if they were going to cave, they should have gone for 6 months. As it is now, a year from now, right before Christmas, the Dems are going to use the same club against the Repubs.

I agree that it could have been better for our side.

Here's what we should do. Do not let the unemployment issue slip off the radar. There are two problems that need to be addressed once our pubbies are seated after the first of the year:

1-No one, I repeat, no one, is paying attention to whether or not those receiving unemployment insurance are actually seeking work. I am an employer who has had occaision to sit before people and actually offer them $12 an hour jobs, only to have them pass. Reason? They are making money on the side, not reporting the income, which together with their unemployment, adds up to more than I am offering. Remember when people would put in applications just to meet requirements for unemployment insurance? Not any more. This must be fixed!

2-In most states, including my state of Virginia, if an individual takes a position in which he makes less than he made in the previous job he was laid off from, and he is laid off from the lesser paying job, when he seeks unemployment status again, his payments will be based on the lower paid job. This is a deterrent to anyone even considering going back into the workforce, unless he or she can get what the were making to begin with, a near pipe-dream in this economy. I'm not sure what the fix for this should be, but I'm sitting here with open positions and cannot hire anyone.

Do Democrats have any economic ideas that actually spur economic growth? Or do they just count on the Bush tax cuts?
