Townhall has received the following statement from Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell on tonight's proposed tax compromise: I appreciate the determined efforts of the President and Vice President in working with Republicans on a bipartisan plan to prevent a tax hike on any American and in creating incentives for economic growth. Their efforts reflect a growing bipartisan belief that a new direction is needed if we are to revive the economy and help put millions of Americans back to work. Members of the Senate and House will review this bipartisan agreement, but I am optimistic that Democrats in Congress will show the same openness to preventing tax hikes the administration has already shown."

McConnell Praises Tax Deal, Applauds Obama
I'd note that this is a far more magnanimous statement than the president's, who spent a good portion of his brief remarks attacking Republicans. It also signals that there will be general (though perhaps not unanimous) support for the plan among members of the Senate GOP caucus. Senate Democrats -- and especially their House counterparts -- are a different story altogether. As I mentioned earlier, the White House will send Vice President Biden to Capitol Hill to reassure unhappy members of their own party.
(OK Mitch. . .enough WAS enough; and now, it really is.) WHAT a fool. Off with him.
This is how you destroy them.
It's called Divide And Conquer.
He's on the downward slope over at DU. There's nothing to indicate that any dramatic turn is going to happen there.
True...but he's been forced to give the rich a break which means that the country will NOT head toward bankrupty.
Now job creation can take place more rapidly which means the deficit gets reduced faster. This is not what Obama wanted. He wanted an FDR-like 10 year recession. But he lost hold of that chance today.
” Every word that Mitch uses to praise Obama digs the salt in the wound of the far left even more. They HATE it that McConnell is smiling at this deal.
If Mitch is praising him, it reminds them that Obama has caved bigtime. “
We have a winner !
The left is all over the tv and internet trashing Barry for capitulating, collapsing, caving, crawling on his belly and surrendering .
They’re having a collective breakdown.
They also say if Barry was going to go limp, he should have forced the Republicans to agree to amnesty or DADT, not unemployment benefits.
Mitch is merely throwing fuel on the fire .
The talk of a primary opponent for Barry is already beginning.
At this point in the game, it's not like we're sitting here slow playing pocket aces. Add it up - we working with a meager 41 senators, 170-some congress critters, and an administration that's openly hostile to the job creation engine. The opposition just basically admitted that tax increases are lethal to any kind of economic recovery, and it's a stunning revelation.
As for the increase in spending for unemployment benefits - what do you think would happen to overall Government spending if taxes were raised and unemployment jumped up another 5 points? Less time they could spend on UI, but more of them. Probably a zero sum game on the spending side.
That’s exactly what it is. It’s also a divide and conquer strategy. Liberals are absolutely becoming incensed and demoralized over this. This thread is proof that some only want to habitually complain and will invent reasons to complain if need be. I remember a thread where there was an article with McConnell being quoted as being critical of Obama for thinking that it is the government’s role to directly create jobs. There was comment after comment with people blasting McConnell for saying it was the government’s role to create jobs.
Really, really good job.
Indeed. There was compromise, but in this case, they compromised with us - not the other way around. We had the upper hand.
I'm more pessimistic. I think its too late and things are already out of hand.
More to come in the New Year with the new Congress.
Smart play. Nothing is done, taxes go up and the new republican led congress takes the blame by the msm. If this didn’t happen, more jobs would be lost because companies wouldn’t invest money.
It was a tradeoff. It cost the country an additional 13 weeks in exchAnge for companies getting the tax breaks and the certainty that they can start to rehire. The taxes of people going back to work will pay for the 13 weeks of unemployment insurance.
Now if companies don’t start to rehire, we have a bigger problem on our hands.
Hate the pukes all you want. It was a Political play to get people back to work.
Agree. Obama, Inc. has counted the hairs here; and will leave little room as possible to the natural forces of Capitalism. Whatever; may we overcome and less taxes will make it easier to do so, for the immeidate haul.
That said; if one more Repub makes a 'suck up' sound re Obama as has Mitch McConnell; that is it for them! (That would be ANYthing, gratuitously complimentary or appeasing; no matter how small the gesture.)
Lets make a deal republicans....just as I thought would happen status quo
And it's more stormy seas for him ahead as he has to work with a Repub congress.
Logic dictates he's going to have a very rough time worming back into their good graces and getting them nearly as motivated as they were in '08. Far from it. They're going to be looking all over the landscape for someone else.
We just kept the marginal tax rates from increasing on Jan. 1 (for me by 4%), plus we got a 2% raise for a year by cutting the SS tax by 2% (money I would never see at retirement). That's 6% on my paycheck for the next year.
And just think how hard it will be for the dems to raise the SS withholding 2% next year after eveyone gets used to the extra money in their pay checks, and then to have to raise the marginal rate in a Presidential year. They just handed us the tax and spend argument in spades!!
And we did this with only 41 Senate votes and a flaming lib president.
The compromise is also a serious concession that Dems agree that increased taxes will hurt the economy, and illustrates just how pro-tax the dems are.
They were going to get some unemployment benefits restored. So I'll take the bird in the hand -- 6% for me.
We can work on the spending and austerity when we get our majority in place in the house in January and when we get the Senate and Presidency in 2012.
And it's so fun to watch the Left's collective heads explode.
So chill. Our day will come on the spending side. Chill.
13 weeks of continued unemployment would have been acceptable. However, 13 months is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Retired and paid my dues, I get nothing. Those freeloaders get 50+ more weeks. BS.
This is a sell-out, period.
It is very satisfying; this was not what they bargained for. (Would say: "not what they 'paid for"; but we know, they don't pay for anything.)
Still, Mitch seems ready for retirement...he has no stomach for the good fight.
