The earliest feminists in the 19th century were pretty strange; into “free love” - they hated marriage; some were into “open marriage” and other kinky stuff. A few years ago on FR someone (wish I could remember who) had all kinds of info that I saved on a computer that died. Maybe one day I’ll look it up again.

I guess you are partly a consequence of the woeful lack of history in our schools. The early feminists are the reason women can Vote, it didn't just happen on its own you know? Feminism isn't a specific ideology like Marxism but a mish-mash group of women who have various ideas of what female equality means. The modern movement has taken a weird and narrow Marxist form, but I would claim that conservative women like Gov Palin, Rep. Bachmann etc are in fact Conservative Feminist. If not for the "Evil" feminists of the 19th century (Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Mary Wollstonecraft etc etc) inspite of their somewhat kooky ways, I would argue that the rise of modern conservative Feminist women would not be possible. At least Know what you are talking about sometimes.
