Is this the Keystone Cops presidency? Barack Obama needs to get serious about WikiLeaks
The London Daily Telegraph ^ | December 6, 2010 | Nile Gardiner

The White House strategy so far has been to largely ignore WikiLeaks, and let Hillary Clinton and the State Department handle the fall-out from the debacle. The president hasn’t even commented publicly on the release of over a quarter of a million US diplomatic cables, despite the immense damage the leak is doing to American diplomacy and US strategic interests on the world stage. He is giving all the appearance of a commander-in-chief who is not in control, with an inept administration that seems to blunder from one crisis to another, at times with no-one at the helm.

That’s surely going to have to change, with WikiLeaks now dramatically upping the stakes with the release of some extremely sensitive documents which will be exploited by terrorist groups across the world, including al-Qaeda. As The Times has just reported:

WikiLeaks raised the stakes tonight in its battle with the United States with the release of a secret list of vaccine suppliers, mineral sources and pieces of infrastructure that Washington believes would harm US security if attacked.

Experts said the cable, published by the whistle-blower_website as part of an unauthorised trove of diplomatic correspondence, was a gift for terrorist organisations wanting to harm the United States as it spelt out the pipelines, undersea cables and factories across the world — including a number in Britain — that would cause most damage to US interests if destroyed.

The WikiLeaks disclosures are not only embarrassing for Washington on the world stage – they also pose a fundamental threat to the security of the United States and key allies including Great Britain. And it’s the third time this year that the nefarious organisation has dumped vast numbers of confidential US documents on the Internet with complete impunity, aided and abetted by The New York Times(continued)

I can't understand why some here think Mr. Julian Assange is a hero, just because he did this during the Obama administration. Using that logic, lefties and conservatives would be free to leak anything to an enemy if they didn't like the current president.

It's because he came out and called for the removal of Obama... if this Assange guy was to claim he had Obama's birth certificate, many here would build a golden temple for him... it baffles me too.

Yep, but he wants him removed for the worst reason I can think of: For “spying” on the United Nations and it's apparatchiks.

Many on the left want him to be replaced by a ‘real’ liberal.

First off he doesn’t have a clue about being president even after 2 years on the job, and second he doesn’t have the balls to have this prik silenced.

You fill the government from top to bottom with anti-American Marxists and this is what you get. Why is anyone suprised? Think this is the end of it? Now shut up, get in line and drop your pants!

Is there a thread yet on Drudge's DOOMSDAY FILES link to Fox News? Assange has attained Dr. Evil status, blackmailing the entire world, this moment.

it’s not that he is ignoring it... it’s that he helped make it happen. that’s why he isn’t overly upset.

sorry, you don’t get 3 million classified documents laying around any old office. that was coordinated

It’s amazing how similar Soetoro’s reaction to Wikileaks has been to his reaction to the oil leak. Nothing.

Then he shuts down practically ALL oil drilling.

Does this provide a clue to his next action with regard to Wikileaks? I.e., simply shut down American diplomacy?

If your goal is to reduce America to Third World (or Fourth World) status, why does America need diplomacy or a functioning State Department?

Why has Soetoro continued the “fighting” in Afghanistan, with more loss of life in 2010 than in all of 2001-2008?

Cover. It lulls the people who WANT to believe they have a President who is a patriot and is interested in defense. It’s just part of the pose.

Only in that it may expose Obama, but Assange appears to be purposely protecting Obama by selective leaks. Now, if Obama could be tied to the leak -- that would an impeachable offense that would dwarf Watergate.

What has crossed my mind is that Obama operatives may have used the classified Siprnet setting up a reverse "honey pot" to attract a dumb enough patsy to bite on it. Enter PFC Manning.

I'm beginning to think like you. Did Obama do this to bring down the US? If folks truly believe he is a President that hates the USA this could be closer to the truth.

I hate thinking this about any American. But if in fact the obama administration and its allies wanted to destroy the USA this certainly would be one way to accomplish their goal.

Very scary times indeed.

Rumor is he is so far gone (Obama) that all decisions coming out of the Whitehouse are being made by a trifecta—Michelle, Valerie, and Michelle’s mom. http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/

He’s already done dozens of things that dwarf Watergate and there’s no serious talk of impeachment.

I can't understand why some here think Mr. Julian Assange is a hero, just because he did this during the Obama administration.

How to respond without overstating my meaning...there is a percentage of people on both the right and left ends of the political spectrum who may be chronological adults, but are truly juvenile thinkers. I'll let it go at that.

As for Obama, his complete neglect of the WikiLeaks matter should be drawing far more national attention and condemnation than it is. I'm not a big fan of congressional hearings, but this is one time when I hope both houses of Congress hold very serious hearings on this whole mess as soon as possible in the new year.

In a less bitterly partisan era, a joint House and Senate committee would already have been formed to investigate the matter. These days, perhaps the best we can hope for is a hearing in whatever House committee has jurisdiction.
