If she is called out on this, she will say she was speaking metaphorically. Of course, if Republicans use any such metaphors, such as the time Sarah Palin said to re-load, the liberals take any such statements literally and have the obligatory meltdown.

See, liberals are allowed to say outrageous things, and claim it was just a symbolic statement, metaphor, etc., but anything conservatives say is interpreted literally. So conservatives must choose their words very carefully, while liberals can say whatever the heck they want. Those are the rules, sad to say.

Actually, I think she would be right to say it's a metaphor. All other things being equal, I would say it's silly to say this is a "call to violence". Unfortunately, as you point out, all other things are not equal. Sarah Palin could never have gotten away with this. I never know what to do when a liberal makes a (relatively) benign statement that a conservative would have gotten roasted for. Instead of interpreting the statement the way a liberal would if a conservative had said it, I think it's probably better to just point out the double standard, as you did.

No, No, No! Every time we bow to their rules, we diminish ourselves. Look at the most feared people - Sarah Palin, Jim DeMint, Ann Coulter - what they say and how they say it. Speak the truth; if LIBs don’t like it, they can SIUTA.

See my tag line.

“So conservatives must choose their words very carefully, while liberals can say whatever the heck they want. Those are the rules, sad to say.”

Who decided that those are the rules, and why do we have to follow them? I say we take free speech back.

We shouldn’t be more civil, we should be totally unconcerned with it. Dan Akroyd gave us as start with the immortal, “Jane, you ignorant slut.”

Let them have both barrels. Never back down. Demand that Stupid Party legislators stop referring to Evil Party legislators as “my esteemed colleague.” Insist that they begin their comments, “This lying, America-hating lump of hyena shit.”

They can say whatever they want? What kind of capons are willing to put up with that?
