Seems as tho respect for our heroes is not in fashion here on FR.
Sad any time at all, but particularly during this season.
Seahawk helicopter pilot.
Atlantic Bch is not JAX.It is a quiet residential neighborhood next to Mayport NS where choppers are based.
I hope to retire there and ride my bike to the beach.
You need to hurry up and get out of Maine before it begins to rub off on you any more than it has ~ and I’m allowed to say that as former native Mainiac.
I wouldn’t have used the same words, but riding a bike is dangerous even in the light of day. Let alone at closing time of the bars...
Biking is dangerous on roads, only compounded by darkness, w/e evenings when people are drunk, wet, crowded roads, bad parts of town..
My town, I kid you not. They put up “share the road” signs on both sides of the (very busy) street along with painted markers designating shared lanes, each sign is spaced by only about 100 yards, goes on for like, two miles each way. It looks insane, it is insane..
I complained about the waste of money, and that only a sucide inclined person would ride their bike on “that” busy street. I got a very smarmy response from the city, stating that bikers pay taxes too.
So, guess what they did? Shortly after my written complaint, they replaced every single sign, with a similars sign of different color??!!!
Times are a changin’ here in Maine....we just elected one of the most conservative governors in the U.S. on November 2nd....Paul LePage, the TEA Party’s choice, too.
The GOP also won control of our Senate and House as well.
The nominee for Maine Secretary of State is also a conservative guy and an Iraq war vet.
Now if we could only replace our entire Congressional delegation.......
Prayers for the Navy Lt. and his family.
My buddy at work got hit on his bike by a hit and run driver. A tenth of second sooner and he probably would have been killed. Got away with minor injuries.
He still wants to ride. He has kids, and their birth mother was lost in a traffic accident.
I tried to talk him out of it. It’s not worth it, at least not out with cars.
Too many fools out there to be only on a bicycle. And I used to ride too, but I always tried to minimize my time sharing roads with cars.
One fool texting and your over.
It’s too risky and I am a private pilot used to managing risk.
I can’t manage other drivers however.
Not worth it, just not worth it.
I know. I heard about all the Pubs elected there. I was just joshing with you about that. But, in all seriousness, I would never move back to Maine. It will take years of Pub control to recover from the damage the Dems have done there. AND, they need to get rid of all those Somalis!
Actually, it’s safer to ride in the morning than in the middle of the day. 2AM=no traffic. I used to have a job that made me work early in the morning and I went to work on my road bike and didn’t come home until 9AM. The ride home was a doozy because everybody was going to work, but the ride to work was smooth sailing since everybody was asleep.
May your daughters’ journey be safe, and time at home peaceful.
Pay no attention to the crass mockery.
I reserve that for people deliberately doing very, very stupid and deadly things.
This probably was not the brightest and best idea to do at 1:50 am in the morning, but to say it rises to that, no. Riding a bike isn’t like someone jumping off a house roof onto a trampoline and dying. Killing yourself by your own stupid actions is Darwin award stuff, this guy’s actions alone would not have killed himself, some other idiot did.
I would never do it. I don’t even ride on the streets during the afternoon hours, too many people driving while texting or on the phone, not paying attention. Being in the dark while riding, it’s that much more dangerous and a lot more drunk people are out driving then.
Thanks for the ping. It’s a sad and shameful thing to happen to this young warrior. My prayers for his family and a special prayer that his killer be caught quickly!
RIP.
Amen. Any decent person would stop...certainly you KNOW if you hit something like a human adult on a bike. You know when you hit a pot hole so there is no way the driver wouldn’t have known he hit something and stop to see what it was. He probably was drinking...why else would one RUN from an accident?
Yes, an admirable young man fighting for our freedoms is home visiting family, riding his bike and...hit by someone who leaves the scene without checking to see if he/she can be of help. I too hope they catch the driver/s! Then I hope they put them away so that their life/lives are shut down as this young man’s was.
This story is very sad. Who knows why this young man was out riding his bike? Maybe he is still trying to cope with having been at war, and was unable to sleep. Maybe he recently found out that a loved one is ill. Who knows?
Mrs. Taxman just told me that the local news is reporting that the hit-and-run scumbag has been arrested!
