Big deal. This could be fixed if the ssan were linked with the real person and the paycheck was mailed to that person.

So...let’s say someone else is using MY Soc Sec #...doesn’t that mean they are contributing to my pay (I haven’t paid into SS for about 20 years - haven’t been “working”)...Does that mean my account will be affected for my retirement calculations? Or does that mean some illegal will eventually SUE me for THEIR part of the Soc Sec They “paid?”

Each state has its own computer system for tracking/paying/administering benefits like food stamps, AFDC, etc. Some of the crooks use the same SS# in Texas, Florida and NY to receive benefits. They can do this because the feds do not simply compare the social security numbers from one state against the others.

Remember this story the next time someone says “We can’t just deport all the illegal immigrants.”
It would be easy, flat out easy, to make illegal immigrants self-deport. If the name & SSN don’t match in the IRS database, the employer is not allowed to issue a paycheck to that person.
No pay, no stay.
As the story points out, we KNOW who is hiring illegal immigrants simply from the SSN mis-matches. And we aren’t doing squat about it.

I know someone who works at the IRS and she sayes that they hate this kind of thing. Note that the IRS does have an area that handles ID Theft as it relates to taxes. Multiple people using Tax Ids is an enormous waste of everyones time.
When earnings are reported they may be associated with your SSN, but also a name and the name submitting employer. If multiple people are using one SSN and you file a return, it it possible to sort out your earnings and withholding from Ms. Ima Illegal-Grande who is also using your SSN.
No clue how Social Security handles this.

No one in Washington DC gives a crap about SS# fraud by illegal aliens. I think they laugh about it at cocktail parties, about how perturbed “the little people” are about this SS# fraud and illegal immigration in general. The greater DC area has grown like crazy in the last 30 years and it’s swarming with immigrants and illegal immigrants. I saw this as far back as 1990 when visiting Bethesda Maryland

question: SS sends out your yearly summery with your taxable income listed by year... if somebody was using your SS#, wouldn't your taxable income be higher on the SS form than your W2 and a tip off you had somebody else using your SS#???
