(WSB Radio) -- Despite the freezing temperatures, hundreds fought for a place in line in Marietta to apply for federal aid to help pay their heat and power bills this winter. Only 30 people were being let in at a time at the assistance center in Marietta.
"It was freezing," applicant Linda Benefield told WSB-TV. "I was in line for three hours and 15 minutes, but I needed the help."
Some needed even more help just to deal with the cold. Ambulances were cold in and took at least two people to the hospital because of the freezing temperatures .
"People just couldn't stand the cold," said applicant Deandre Marshall. "They were not letting people in fast enough."
Marshall said people in line were crying, afraid they would not even get a chance to apply.
"I never thought I would be in the line," Marshall said. "It's almost like being in a soup line during the great depression."
The money is offered through a network of agencies in Georgia.
If the people in line voted at all in 2008, they voted for the One.

I am not sure the country can take two more years of this imbecile Obama. He lays waste to everything he comes in contact with. I am not much one on conspiracy theories but I am beginning to believe he is crushing our economy, military and international relations on purpose. Its kind of scary what is going on these days.
Stick around, kid! You ain't seen nothin' yet!
I'm sure the ambulances were cold, too, after they were called in.
There is a big failure here. What the local government should have done is found a local heated building nearby, then issued sequential carnival tickets (from any office supply store) to everybody in line, then taken everybody over to the heated building to wait. With tickets they wouldn’t even have to wait in line, and could get comfortable.
When the next group was ready, send someone over to the heated building and as “everybody from ticket number ‘x’ to ticket number ‘y’, please come with me.
Doing it this way, after a few groups, they could even announce the approximate wait times, so people could attend to other business if they wanted to.
A little prior planning can make a lot of friends, in an uncomfortable situation like this.
I wonder why they waited until it got freezing before taking care of this. In marietta the people are not likely to freeze to death anyway. Might get uncomfortable, but not dangerous. Yes, I’ve lived there.
Oh, please. Marietta has mostly conservative representatives, and they are usually voted in with high majorities.
The politicans should all be forced to help pass out food commodities to the frail elderly senior citizens..at the community center where I quilt it’s done once a month, a few cans of fruit, veggies and maybe some rice or dry beans...they qualify for $10-30 in food stamps. The number coming is up nearly 3 times over the past 18 monts...since the seniors didn’t get COLA raises this year.
NOW if you were an Illegal......sky the limit...including PRE-NATAL care.
Since when do the rulers care for the comfort of supplicants?
