"N. Korea deploys more multiple-launch rockets: source

SEOUL, Dec. 3 (Yonhap) -- North Korea has added more multiple-launch rockets capable of hitting the South Korean capital, a military source said Friday, amid heightened tensions over the North's fatal artillery attack on a South Korean island.

The North's rockets and long-range artillery, capable of raining down shells on Seoul, which lies about 50 kilometers from the heavily armed border, are the biggest defense concern for South Korea. "

DPRK will not invade ROK or launch arty attack at level requiring MEANINGFUL retaliation from ROK or US forces. Last weeks arty attack was for internal consumption, to show DPRK mil that Junior has balls.

“The Kim family needs a subsidy and nobody’s paying. It’s blackmail, pure and simple.”

Problem for Kim is that we used to pay, now no one is paying. So what does he do? Ball back in Kim’s court.

The pattern of provoke, negotiate, pay-off, provoke looks to be over. I would not presume a predictable outcome.

I remember seeing some pictures of a military parade in NK ... no planes, few tanks, just men and some artillery ...

Oh yeah, forgot about them ... ever see those pictures of downtown Pyongyang? Beautiful western looking buildings - and female traffic cops with no traffic to control. Blank empty streets with maybe a few trucks here and there ....

Or get a lot of us killed.

Zero just arrived in Afghanistan for a surprise visit to the troops. Must be time to refuel his ego.

Welcome to Free Republic. If you copy and paste someone else's intellectual property it's a good idea to source it and provide a link to the original, especially if you are posting the full, unexcerpted text of a New York Times columnist, which is verboten here.

P.S. Thomas L. Friedman is a smart guy, but not exactly a reliable choice for conservative thought.

“Here is my take, it could be the regime in NK know it is over and they want to take South Korea down with them..

That is a simple possibility that we better be prepared for.

On the other hand this may be what the chins are looking for. If the US goes in, now the chins decide to get involved or they lose face with their nationalist pride. I bet their generals are chomping at the bit to show off all their brand new hardware. They can use it as a pretext to go after Taiwan because we would be to busy with NK.

You post was from the NYT which has to be excerpted and linked.
