The Bucks County district attorney said a Quakertown hunter gunned down moments after he bagged a buck Monday was shot with a high-powered rifle, which is illegal for deer hunting in the county.
Barry Groh, 52, was found dead of a gunshot wound in a creek along California Road in Richland Township, two hours after he shot the nine-point, 195-pound deer and phoned his wife to tell her about his trophy kill.
An autopsy revealed Groh was shot once in the left upper arm and the bullet entered his chest, according to the district attorney's office. Police have labeled his death as suspicious, but can't say whether it was a hunting accident or something sinister.
District Attorney David Heckler said several people have been interviewed, mostly hunters, and they've been cooperative.
He said determining what type of ammunition killed Groh will go a long way in determining who fired the weapon, but investigators still haven't determined the caliber.
Heckler said rounds from a high-powered rifle are much more accurate, much deadlier and travel farther, which is why they are illegal in the county.
"Over the years, there has been a lot more development in Upper Bucks," Heckler said Thursday. "We've had shots going through people's houses."
Besides Bucks County, hunting deer with rifles is illegal in other special regulation areas such as Allegheny, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties.
Hunters in Bucks are only allowed to use muzzle-loaders, bows and arrows, crossbows and shotguns during hunting season, according to Pennsylvania Game Commission regulations.
Groh was using a shotgun, Heckler said.
Police said Groh was hunting alone Monday morning near California Road when he killed the buck about 10:15 a.m. They believe Groh then put his shotgun down and dragged the buck about 300 feet.

Well, compared to what? A bit better, I think, than the old style slug but nowhere near high power rifle accuracy.
They’re intended for use at “slug range” anyway, so say 100, 150 yds max.
In this case, accuracy isn’t that important if it’s an accidental shooting. We don’t know the hold point, range, visibility, or even really what the projectile is.

Warden: "You hunt twelve months of the year as it is. If you get another month, you gotta name it."

That reminds me. There is an actual Coon Hunting Association near my farm. Heck, near my home in the seattle burbs, I was feedin’ a family of five a big batch of chocolate covered coffee beans that had melted together.
They got rambunctious though. At one point I was standing three feet from the trunk (stripped of branches) of a Douglas fir in my back yard, staring down a coon at about my chest height clinging to the tree trunk. I had a baseball bat in my hand, but I just could not bring myself to do it. But in Kentucky I have a completely different mindset.

Since you don't know the difference, I am posting photos below to show that there is NO way they look alike. FYI, the sabot slugs are on the left and the rifle cartridge is the single one on the right.
That rifle cartridge looks exactly like the 7.62’s my SKS uses.
So Heckler would rather you hunt with a weapon that is less accurate and less deadly? Wouldn't this mean more game animals, that if not tracked and found, would die a slow agonizing death.
He should have said that due to population density, weapons with a shorter range are mandated to decrease the risk of an errant bullet hitting nearby citizens or property.

In specialized shotguns, much more accurate than the old “punkin’ ball” slugs. Capable of 3” groups at 150 yards.

Rifles are not supposed to be used in densely populated areas.
You did not show a jacketed sabot round. I’ve seen 30 cal and 375 cal tips in sabots.
