When Mark Kirk is sworn in this afternoon, the U.S. Senate will once again have no African-Americans.
Since Reconstruction, there have only been four black senators. Three of them -- Carol Moseley Braun, Barack Obama and Roland Burris -- have held the seat that Kirk is about to occupy.
For reasons that go back more than a century, all the way to the First Great Migration from the South, Illinois has led the nation in black political empowerment. Weve elected more black statewide officials than anyone else. We produced the first black president. And it was a matter of pride among many Illinoisans that we kept the Senate integrated. In 2004, we picked such a great black senator that he went on to integrate the presidency.

If the crooked banker for the mob had won, do you suppose these CFL-bulbs would be running this story?
What a shock, what's next we must have a gay hispanic in a Senate seat? Or an Asian in a Senate seat?
This is what those creeps mean by "social justice". They think they deserve to have whatever they want because of the evil white people.
Hate to see Diablo in but I'm glad to see Burris go. I wish that guy and Judy Baar Topinka would move to Russia and leave us alone already.
This is a blog by an outside writer...
“Edward McClelland is the author of Young Mr. Obama: Chicago and the Making of a Black President, which will be published in October by Bloomsbury Press. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Nation, and on the websites Salon and Slate, among others.”
Whatever happened to the Barack Obama guy?
Didn’t they try to sell his Senate seat to another black man?
I’m sure they would have run the same story had Giannoulias won. /sarc
Of course not. These are the same media thugs who accused everyone in the 10th Congressional District of being racist because Dan Seals (black man) lost three elections in a row.
I am sick to death of these race hustlers.
The Senate can be “re-integrated” by having Chuck Schumer resign and replaced with Alvin Greene. Not legal you say? The law doesn’t matter when it comes to race issues. I’m sure Schumer or some other Dem would be happy to “take one” for “integration.” I’m also sure Alvin would be willing to step forward to take up the challenge.
OK, I’m ready to trade Allen West to the Senate to replace Bill Nelson and Tim Scott to the Senate to replace Lindsey Graham.
Problem solved
Disagree. Detroit has a far larger black representation, and look at it. Chicago is second, and it is a freakin mess.
The U.S. Senate has never had an African-American. No U.S. senator was born in Africa.
I live in the 10th Congressional District, and I know that I’m not racist because, in the 2004 U.S. Senate race, I voted for Alan Keyes. Some Democrats voted for Obama because he’s black, but Keyes is darker than Obama.
That has yet to be determined...
I say this: So bloody what?
There is actually an enormous irony here, but not one that you’ll see in the media.
Blacks and Jews both vote Democratic overwhelmingly. Thus it is reasonable to assume the proportion of Democratic senators should roughly equal their share of the Democratic electorate.
Jews roughly 4%, blacks roughly 20%, assuming half of the US population votes Democratic.
There are zero black senators (0%) and 13 Jewish senators (26% of Democratic electorate).
It appears the Jewish Democrats have swiped all the black Senate seats. Why is the “proportionate to population” rule never applied to this group?
Caveat: I’ve had difficulty determining how the recent elections affect this spread.
You know the libs LOVE pushing the race card. Maybe they should examine that loser Dan Seals. I will LOL if he runs for a forth time.
