Not to nitpick (nor defend the LA Times), but...

The article didn't say that Democrats held every office in the 1930s; they said "one party controls both houses of the Legislature and every one of the state's constitutional offices." In the case of California, I think the Republicans held all those offices in the 1930s (although I didn't check each and every one).

Yer right it looks like the GOP had all the offices (and both houses of the state leg) till 1932 when they lost a US Senate seat. By the list of Speakers and Pres Pro Tems the State Assembly held out till the 1936 election and the rats didn’t take the Senate till ‘58.
