Jim if’n it was me I would take FreeRepublic completely down and start diagnostics from there. This sounds like possibly a modified DOS attack.
This post, for example, required ‘refresh’ clicks each step of the way,

I got same result, but hit the 3rd slot on the bottom ‘to 33’
and it opened up.
Earlier this AM was getting the temp msg but when I got in it said ‘server won’t connect’ when I tried to answer something.
So If you DON’T get this, you will know I am experiencing the same problem again.

Since it works when you hit reload a few times, I bet its just one of the servers that are down. Load balancing is sending some requests to one server that is having problems, other requests are going to ones that work. If it was a DOS it would be hard to reach anything at all.
If this were my system, I’d be looking at my load balancer. The fact that refresh gets past the 404’s makes it look like one server is not connecting.

I edited it a bit.
Problems began before 0330 PST this morning. Posts at that time indicated the problem began yesterday with multiple posts and slowly increased in frequency. Posts at that time were relatively infrequent,..All posts listing went back for several hours, perhaps low activity or simply similar behavior inhibiting number of good hit posts.
Multiple posts appear to be due to the post being queued, then “Service Temporarily Unavailable” header message being replied to a Post action, and poster posting the same reply again forming a multiple post by duplicate poster generated action.
I will post this once. If 503 message reply occurs, I will close out and repost a different note to document event.
Nope - I can ping both, and both answer up fast...
