Yet more evidence of how much of our daily lives are focused on the federal executive. We have created a modern kingship, where a split lip is national news, yet the daily, monthly, even annual undertakings of our state legislatures - actions which significantly affect our lives - fail to make headlines outside little-read capitol newspapers. The presidency has become increasingly imperial and intolerable, with no expense spared for the comfort and safety of one man and no limit to the focus on his every action or inaction; even his wife, an unelected individual, has a paid staff of 24. If we spent half the time, energy and money on our local and state governments - the one’s our Founders meant for us to focus on - as we do on the federal executive alone, we would have vastly improved and more accountable government. There is no reason that the Congress should be meeting year round, and there is no reason that the president should be the focus of daily attention unless there are concerns for our common defense or other appropriate issues. We must break the power of this federal government, and our slavish mindset toward it, or it will surely break us.
