Megyn Kelly: C’mon, you can’t blame Obama for this North Korea situation
Hot Air ^ | NOVEMBER 23, 2010 | ALLAHPUNDIT

Via Mediaite. Alternate headline: “Confirmed: Megyn Kelly’s a RINO.” Seriously, though, explain to me (and her, by proxy) how the NorKs would have behaved differently over the past two years with Bush in office, especially given that their first nuclear test came on his watch.

When they went ahead with their ICBM test launch in April 2009, The One demanded that they be punished with the same ceremonial wrist slap that all U.S. presidents resort to, i.e. a Security Council statement.

They responded by breaking off from six-party talks, and not only has he refused to re-engage them — even after their nuclear test last year (and notwithstanding his nonsense during the campaign about talking with anyone without preconditions) — but officials in the White House are already warning that they won’t reward bad behavior by rushing into new talks after yesterday’s incident either.

On the contrary, Obama’s going ahead with a joint carrier exercise with South Korea in the Yellow Sea this weekend, which is bound to annoy China as much as it will North Korea. What reason is there to think North Korea’s been more erratic lately because of who’s in the White House than because of the instability created by the succession of power from Kim pere to Kim fils?

I am surprised she did that....that is not a flattering photo of her at all.

(and I say this as one who loves these types of photos)

Sorry, Robin, but I can't agree with you on this one. You lend valid support but to a different proposition. Would Americans want him to be tougher? Your evidence suggests that they would. But whether that would work --- whether NKoreans would behave differently as a result --- is a different matter altogether.

Kelly appears to be correct. Obama is not much different in this area from the preceding two administrations, and Koreans behave quite consistently. So did the East Germans and Russians; so did Cuba for one half of a century (until some changes in the last few months).

In sum, nothing you said, however true it may be, invalidates Kelly's conclusion.

Since they been doing this crap since the 50s - I’ll have to agree with her to a point.

Ditto that. I had buddies stationed on the 40th during the 60s and 70s and the NORKs occasionally snuck across and killed a couple of GIs -- just because they could. Not even mentioning the Pueblo incident during the LBJ administration, recall the Panmujong(sp?) attacks back in the 70s when some GIs went out to cut a tree down right outside the so called 'peace village' that was hampering their view of the other side and the NORKs sent a hit squad out and literally beat a GI to death with shovels and axes.

We didn't do anything then. It's in no ones interest to get a hot war on those close confines -- millions would die if it happens.

But the crazy NORKs will just keep doing low level stuff for whatever crazy internal reason they have.

I would not invest a single watt of energy necessary to try to understand their insane internal politics. It is not going to end in a good way until both China and Russia decide it should end.

I wouldn't even give whatever pervert in charge on N. Korea the time of day. From the US standpoint, he should be a nonentity. All of my diplomatic efforts would be in Beijing and Moscow to bring an end to that insanity once and for all. They could make it happen overnight -- if they wanted it to.

In international politics, the perception of strength and the perception of our willingness to use it are powerful ameliorators of rogue nation bad behavior.

Undoubtedly true as stated. But how did it apply to the Soviet Union of East Germany. It was under tough Reagan that the Soviets shot down a Korean civilian airliner in cold blood. No Regan toughness dissuaded them from doing so. Thugs behave as thugs.

A tougher behavior by an adiminstration would minimize (somewhat) the chances of misdeeds but to claim, as you and other critics of Kelly do, that it would prevent them is qui-i-i-t-e overreaching.

Exactly - there’s also the Camp Liberty Bell incident, as you say incidents big & small over the years.

“It was under tough Reagan that the Soviets shot down a Korean civilian airliner in cold blood. No Regan toughness dissuaded them from doing so. Thugs behave as thugs.”

True but at the same time under Reagan things got done. We had a Mig fly over Osan AB one day - a week later we launched 120 Phantoms in 12 minutes from Osan - every Phantom in Korea & the PI that would fly was shuttled over for a show of force while the Navy went in to play.

Exactly.

This will be just one of many flagrant threats and acts of aggression worldwide because our enemies know Hussein is all talk and clueless.

Obama can’t be blamed for N.Korea’s behaviour. But, let’s give Bill Clinton the credit he deserves for helping N.Korea’s pot-bellied, tyrant get nuclear technology. Crazy dictator possessing nukes, don’t that make you feel so secure that Obama is Prez?

Don't know what others claimed. Please read my posts before responding. I used the word 'ameliorate'... it means to make better or to improve upon ... not prevent.

Therfore your criticism of my post is qui-i-i-t-e misdirected.
