The Golden State turns Brown.

The only positive coming out of the Brown election is that he's just crazy enough to possibly do something about the budget, and take on his fellow Dems in the legislature.

There's just no getting around a $25 Billion deficit. You either cut spending or raise taxes by a lot, and they still need a 2/3rd's super-majority to do that.
Besides, with 20% unemployment in the state, and businesses leaving in droves, there are few taxpayers left.
Prop. 13 is safe, so they can't jack up property taxes. They also can't raise revenues by calling new taxes "fees", as the voters passed Prop. 26, which forbids that trick.

I don't think Brown is as committed an ideologue as his Democratic cohorts. He has been a maverick before. I'm hoping he does the right thing this time around, or this state is doomed, financially speaking.
