Remember boys and girl... only our .gov overlords are smart enough, trained enough and safe enough to carry a gun...
"He said that after the plane had landed, a child behind them, who had been seated on his mother's lap, was crawling across the other seats on the row toward the window when his foot knocked something onto the floor. A flight attendant picked it up, he said, and he could see it was a gun magazine."
I am skeptical about this. Don't flight attendant normally check pockets for things left by passengers? it sounds like someone(from CNN) is embellishing this by introducing a child in the story. Anyway, I have never heard of anyone (child or adult) being hurt from a loaded magazine.
I once left a calculator on a plane and was able to retrieve it because the flight attendant found it in a seat pocket and brought it to the lost and found at the airport terminal. I have actually watched flight crew members check pockets on a flight I was boarding for items left by the folks who exited the plane.
Un-effing-believable...
I bet they called the bomb disposal squad, took cover outside the aircraft and soiled their undies.
Of course the officer that lost it should be reprimanded, somebody could have dropped it on their foot and may be crippled for life.
“The head of the Transportation Security Administration said the unnamed law officer will be given remedial training.”
“The officer was not an air marshal and we are trying to establish contact with the agent.”
OK, which is it? and what in the hell is remedial training?
It means he will get the third degree from any and all of his associates, will have to perform a Firearms Safety Course both written and in action, and then he will probably be on probation.Hopefully he will find a better retention pouch for his spares as well.
Mistakes happen, personally I think its not a big issue except that it was on a plane.
Looking at this from an other angle, what happens if one of these state and local cops gets co-opted by the jihadists? Say one has a gambling problem and amasses debts. A Moslem buys the juice and then deals to get the compromised cop to take articles on board.
Homeland Security should look into this. There are plenty of examples where cops are led astray and the safety of our airplanes is too important to allow every single cop from every juristiction unimpeded access to airplanes.
I have lost an ink pen, even my car keys, but never a gun.
I know by feel if my wallet is in my pocket.
Who are these “goobers” that are hired to protect and serve?
State and local officers need to be flying at the request of their agency. In other words, it has to be work related, and it will require their superiors to sign off on their trip.
My god! Someone might have tried to swallow it and choked!
It sounds like a wannabe cop who really shouldn’t be a cop. This is the problem today across the nation.
That is reassuring? You suggest the number of official trips would be limited. But Homeland Security should look into the possibility that cops can and will be co-opted by the jihadists. These bad guys LOOK for exceptions to exploit. They don’t respect law enforcement and quite frankly, the Moslems would HAVE to be trying to identify cops to use. It’s Terrorism with a capital T.
Police are unionized state personnel and will uphold and protect the power of the state over the citizenry. Enforcement and Intelligence gathering. They are not elected as the county Sheriff's departments are elected.
US military? Volunteer in service to the country. TEA Party? Volunteer in service to the community.
But getting back to allowing the police onto the planes without screening, would you not agree the jihadists would be looking for terrorist opportunities? And that "trusted" (or "sworn" as you state) public employees would make a high-impact terrorist statement? That's my point. And for that, these people should be subjected to MORE scrutiny rather than less.
Another option is profiling as you suggest (and I support) and the third option is blaming all this TSA nonsense where it belongs: on the Moslems. Ever since Yasser Arafat's group starting hijacking planes in the 1970's, it's been MOSLEMS who have a particular affinity with the flying craft.
I remember a few years ago when over in England someone found a .22 bullet. The press literally treated it like it was a freakin WMD ready to kill everyone. Never miss a chance to blow things way out of proportion.
Well, one point to CNN for getting the terminology correct.
What happens if one of these cops IS a muslim, doesn’t hide it, then carries a gun onto a plane.
Remember Ft. Hood anyone?
Wouldn’t the title better be: “government agent makes gift to random citizen of ammunition and firearm accessory”?
