I remember listening in the early 90s to shortwave also. For several years I chose not to have a television, so radio was my main source for news, talk shows, etc.
There were lots of patriot programs buzzing then. Some probably still around. Unfortunately, Im now just a few miles outside a large city and can never get anything clear on my shortwave. Ended up selling it.
Have you heard of other people having that problem near a major city?
Cities can be a problem with a lot of radio interference, RFI, if you will. But still, you should be able to get most major broadcasters. Some have left the air and decided to go internet only, thus cutting down on the number of broadcasters but there are still a good number left. I think this is a big mistake because at least you can still reach people in an easy way, all you need is a radio. One major broadcaster of patriot radio is WWCR, World Wide Christian Radio, you should be able to receive that one.

I may try again at some point. Yes, I remember WWCR—a great station.
A few years ago I even ordered a small shortwave radio which carried good Christian teaching directly from a ministry’s channels, 24 hours a day. Had the same problem, nothing clear. I was so disappointed.
