Nicaragua with it's Somoza-ist government is working with Venezuela, Cuba and Iran to make a rival canal to the Panama Canal (which is in the midst of an enormous expansion). The rationale is that Panama is too pro-west for the "Mundo Socialismo" dreams of Hugo Chavez and company. Since, by recent International Court (Hague) ruling, Costa Rica owns the south bak of the route desired, Nicaragua sees a favorable disparity of the Costa Rican National Guard versus the Nicaraguan Army.
