One of the dangers of following book media tours is that several days in, the author slips into narrative cruise control, a storytelling routine that shares the same stories the same ways. This is especially true by the time they reach the West Coast because, given the Eastern location of major media outlets, most promotion tours start there.
Think Sean Hannity and the bald guy on the Today Show with former president George W Bush recently.
Promoting his best-selling memoir Decision Points, Bush made two stops in the L.A. area Thursday, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
He had fresh material for both. At the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, with former First Lady Nancy Reagan on his arm, Bush answered a long series of written audience questions.
I loved being president, said No. 43, and I love not being president.
He said hed still be out of the spotlight if it wasnt for promoting the book. But he intended to return to relative anonymity soon because I just dont want to be out opining on everything since it ends up being taken as critical of his successor. And the jobs hard enough.
He said he hoped Decision Points would be a reference point for future historians and a glimpse of life inside the pressures of the presidency for todays readers. I dont settle scores, said Bush. Im not an angry person. Im a happy guy. Bush did reveal that one of his greatest thrills was surprising U.S. troops on Thanksgiving in Baghdad.
An 8-year-old wanted to know what Bush wanted to be at age 8: Willie Mays!
And Bush recounted how excited he was years later as president to welcome his childhood hero and baseball great to the White House as Commissioner of Bushs annual T-ball games for little people.
On Osama bin Laden: He knows President Obama is still trying to find the 9/11 villain and he wishes hed been able to bring him to justice.
But, Bush added, hes not leading any victory parades.
Any advice for parents of teens? Look them in the eye and say, I love you and theres nothing you can do to make me stop loving you. (pause) So, stop trying!
At NBC, Bush got a standing O from the audience and appreciation from the stand-up comedian: The last time you were here it was 2000. It was 10 years ago. And in the last 10 years, thank you for all the material.
A notorious early-riser, Bush looked at the late-night host and said: You know, I hate to tell you, I dont want to hurt your feelings. But I was asleep.
Bush is still too stupid to know who the enemy is.
He was and remains a class act. God bless him!
“Bush is still too stupid to know who the enemy is.”
He had you fooled.
Bush 41 was foised on Ronald Reagan by the RINO RNC, Bush 43 was foised on America by the SAME RINO RNC. We got fooled TWICE!
OR..so smart that he won’t even give “the enemy” their desired merit.
Leno is the asshat who, during the campaign, said he didn’t make jokes about Obama because there was nothing about Obama that lent itself to joking.
‘Bush is still too stupid to know who the enemy is.’
No it’s just a shame that you want to sell a product bad enough that you will appear on a show that made fun of you almost every night and never showed you any respect...to that extent he lacks good judgement appearing on Leno.
What a class act.
There were LOTS of REAL conservatives that RR could have chosen. Phil Crane to name one
Quit spreading MSN failicies.
Bush is NOT DUMB.
His SAT scores were probably higher than yours , with all due respect for you(my father was in the army aircore).
I know his scores were higher than mine. I can also guarantee that you can not get into Harvard Business School or Yale if you are dumb. It does not matter who your father is.
He also flew fighter jets. I can assure you that our armed forces do not allow low intellingence people to fly multimillion dollar aircraft.
You may not have aggreed with all his policies as our President. Niether did I. However, we need to stop helping the dems continue to spread this inaccurate portrayal of our former POTUS.
I appogize for the lecture especially to a NAVY vet. I respect you and your service to our nation. However, your statement just reinforces MSM and liberal lies.
No one is ever going to please all levels, parts, areas of America. Each has strengths and weakness. Jimmy Carter might not have had any discernible good, other than he went to church and was a Christian.
Issues are important. Sarah is ... what you see is what you get and I thanked God for her when she stepped on to the stage as candidate for VP. A honest, real, person that loved America and wants common sense conservative ideas to prevail.. Go Sarah.
Compared to Obama and or Hillary Sarah is not a liar, cheat, out to control Americans with laws, regulations, horrendous taxes, bankruptcy, and increasing prices on energy, food, gasoline, health care to near or total impoverishment levels for the many.
God help us in our day, in Jesus name, amen.
What an amazing statement from one who should know better. President Bush is the class act who makes those of us who call ourselves Americans ashamed we don’t know when to keep our mouths shut.
Please explain why Reagan was so dumb ? Bush was on the ticket during Reagan's second term
He said when his father had surgery the nurse thought she heard him ask her, "Are my testicles black?" It turned out he was trying to ask, "Are my test results back?"
I thought it went over pretty well and may make it a little harder for Obama & Co. to continue using Bush Derangement Syndrome to advance their agenda.
The BushBots are out in FORCE today. Must of hit a RINO nerve.
LMAO!!!! That is funny!
Another great conservative: Paul Laxalt
