WASHINGTON, Nov 15 (Reuters) - The number of U.S. households that reported getting emergency food from a food pantry almost doubled between 2007 and 2009, at the height of the recession, a government report said on Monday.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said the number of households jumped to 5.6 from 3.9 million.
"Households also accessed additional assistance through USDA's 15 food and nutrition assistance programs," the article in the USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) "Amber Waves" said.
The USDA oversees the government's food stamp program, also known as SNAP or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, for low-income families and other domestic feeding programs like school lunches.

Rooters got this story out too soon. The Pubbies have not even taken over yet. Who was in charge in 2009?
Now, this is CHANGE!
I can be hit with hunger issues in any single afternoon.
Seriously, I got cornered by the census, had to submit to this series of surveys back on W’s watch. The questions were entirely loaded to find any way in which you could possibly be classified as not having your fill of food at your fingertips or in your fridge 24/7.
as planned
I’m hungry.. how bout some free Obama food? or maybe I can just make my own breakfast instead of paying $300 a month on my cell phone, buying new low-pro tires, getting the latest 1080i TV, and buying a $500 handbag..
Good thing I have Moochelle and Barack to give me free stuff.
Sorry libs, you can’t have it both ways. One minute there are MILLIONS of Americans going to bed hungry each night. The next we are big fat fatties that need big brother to tell us what we are allowed to eat because we are too stupid to figure it out ourselves.
BS
This story is misleading on many levels. First, unless you are mentally ill or live in some remote region of the country, hunger is NOT an issue. Period. No question.
Rather, what this story points out is that when you give away free stuff, people take it. There are a lot of lazy people in this country who would rather go to a food bank then get off their arses and get a job. Same with food stamps and other transfer payments.
The press plays up the increase in people relying on public assistance as if its a sign that we are in a deep recession. Some of that is true but a lot more relates to the fact that we now live in a culture where it is acceptable to sit on your butt with your hand out expecting the government to house, feed and clothe you for free.

That explains all the emaciated Americans I see around here.
/sarcasm
40M on food stamps out of 300M people.
A big pot of homemade soup, stew or chili costs pennies a serving compared to fast food. We have too many parents who no longer cook for their families.
They want to control health care as an in to prohibit all fun. Including food you like and recreational pastimes you enjoy that they consider risky. Remember these are the same people who gave us Prohibition.
The Hundred Year War by the Progressive State against human society continues apace...and it’s winning.
The Government has most folks convinced that all of these freebies from the State are “benefits” instead of the soul-destroying impositions that they actually are.
Oh Well, Maybe Mybelle should cut the food stamp budget. Would help reduce the number of Fatties.
That explains all the emaciated Americans I see around here. /sarcasm
But "Seven out of ten Americans are overweight, and according to the Center For Disease Control 26.7% of all Americans are obese."
How many households that are obese/overweight were hit by "hunger issues"?
Must be all those food deserts we heard about from Michelle “supersizeme” Obama.

You beat me! I looked at the headline and the internal truthmeter alarm immediately went off!

uhhhhh ... I was hungry Sunday afternoon.
But then we had dinner.
(Does stuff like that count?)
Now Food Stamp use indicates hunger. A few years ago it was a case of non-use indicating hunger. I wonder what changed.
A few years ago government bureaucrats studied a neighboring rural county. They concluded that most residents were hungry because even though they qualified for food stamps they didnt apply for them.
What these city slicker bureaucrats didnt realize (or ignored) was that these farmers all had kitchen gardens, chickens, hogs and cows for food. They had cash crops and worked side jobs for cash income. They were eating healthier than most city folks.
