President Obama must decide now how he wants to govern in the two years leading up to the 2012 presidential election.
In recent days, he has offered differing visions of how he might approach the country's problems. At one point, he spoke of the need for "mid-course corrections." At another, he expressed a desire to take ideas from both sides of the aisle. And before this month's midterm elections, he said he believed that the next two years would involve "hand-to-hand combat" with Republicans, whom he also referred to as "enemies."
It is clear that the president is still trying to reach a resolution in his own mind as to what he should do and how he should do it.
This is a critical moment for the country. From the faltering economy to the burdensome deficit to our foreign policy struggles, America is suffering a widespread sense of crisis and anxiety about the future. Under these circumstances, Obama has the opportunity to seize the high ground and the imagination of the nation once again, and to galvanize the public for the hard decisions that must be made. The only way he can do so, though, is by putting national interests ahead of personal or political ones.
To that end, we believe Obama should announce immediately that he will not be a candidate for reelection in 2012.
If the president goes down the reelection road, we are guaranteed two years of political gridlock, at a time when we can ill afford it. But by explicitly saying he will be a one-term president, Obama can deliver on his central campaign promise of 2008, draining the poison from our culture of polarization and ending the resentment and division that have eroded our national identity and common purpose....

Well, that way at least he wouldn’t have to comprise with the pesky U.S. citizenry.
It’s very revealing that Democrats/leftists define greatness as simply a matter of who had the best PR.
FReepers are properly skeptical of the notion that the presidency can or should have a direct effect on the daily lives of 300+ million infinitely diverse citizens but the numbers don’t lie when it comes to unemployment and intentional devaluation of currency. The history books don’t lie either when they record/reveal the huge volumes of insidiously complex and ambiguous legislation, executive decrees, etc. put in place by a hard-core group of committed leftists.
As one columnist put it recently, amassing power, pursuing personal aggrandizement in all things and ramming through an agenda with little scrutiny from an asleep-at-the-switch ‘free’ press do not necessarily constitute achievement.
FReepers may have recently noticed that desperate leftists are putting together videos and PowerPoint presentations documenting all the so-called wonderful and courageous things Obama has done. But it’s very thin gruel - a typical ‘accomplishment’ is signing a financial reform (wink wink) law. Whatta guy! Let’s hope he didn’t get writer’s cramp.
And so the Democrats are trapped in a world of their own making where the daily logrolling contest of spin and conventional wisdom (read: groupthink) is the only game in town and reality is an inconvenience - a mere obstacle to negotiate in handing out phony laurel wreaths. The list of words from which the Democrats have intentionally sucked out the marrow of meaning is almost limitless: reform, choice, transparency, etc. Now they have targeted ‘greatness’ and like the youth leagues that don’t keep score Democrats want to be able to claim victory regardless of the actual outcome.
Truth is...he’s lame duck for the next two years. Then Jail!
Hard to imagine he would not run again. It would almost be historic for any president to leave after one term. But then we live in very unusual times. If he decided he does not want it, or if Dems convince him not to go for it because his reelect numbers are so bad, who would run then? Biden, or Clinton?? Scary thought.

Carnival’s rusting hulks of “cruise” ships filled with vomit and feces could never make it here to Iceland. Their rusting hulls would crack from the cold water. The U.S. Coast Guard would not be able to save them.
He has already forfeited any possibility of “great president” status—no matter what he does in the next two years.
