A man was today charged with assaulting a police officer after a poppy burning protest by an Islamic group in London.

Stephen Lennon, 27, the founder of the English Defence League, which was protesting against the burning, was bailed to appear at West London magistrates' court on 22 November.

Two other men, aged 30 and 25, were arrested for public order offences and were bailed pending further inquiries.

Another man was arrested for possession of Class A drugs, and four men, aged 41, 42, 19 and 18, who were arrested for affray were also bailed after the protest in Exhibition Road near the Royal Albert Hall.

Members of Islam Against Crusaders set fire to a large poppy as the clock struck 11am on Armistice Day and chanted "British soldiers burn in hell" during their protest.

Demonstrator Abu Rayah, from east London, said yesterday: “We're here because people talk about all this patriotism but people in Afghanistan want Sharia and the soldiers keep dropping cluster bombs on our people and it's like they just want us dead. We want British and American troops out of Afghanistan now.”

Police stood between the group and members of the English Defence League who were mounting a counter demonstration, and officer was taken to hospital with a head injury during clashes.

Father-of-two Lennon, also known as Yaxley-Lennon and Tommy Robinson, has spoken on behalf of the EDL.

Speaking of lefties, do you know specifics about EDL’s actual politics? Or do you know where to direct me? Are they statists? Socialists? Fascists? Where do they fall on the spectrum?
