In a new interview to be aired tonight with NBCs Matt Lauer to promote his new book, Decision Points, pro-life former President George W. Bush explains a startling conversation that resulted in forming and solidifying his pro-life views. After his mother Barbara Bush suffered an emotional miscarriage, she said to her teenage kid, Heres the fetus, Bush told Lauer.
During the interview, President Bush gestures as if he is holding a jar saying the former First Lady showed him the jar containing the baby and that made a tremendous impact on him.
I never expected to see the remains of the fetus, which she had saved in a jar to bring to the hospital, Bush says. There was a human life, a little brother or sister.
The New York Post reports that, in the interview, Bush tells Lauer, Theres no question that affected me, a philosophy that we should respect life.
But he also says in the interview the purpose of the story [in the book] wasnt to try show the evolution of a pro-life point of view but was really to show how my mom and I developed a relationship.
It indicates Bush received permission from his mother to include the anecdote in the book.
The story is interesting given that Barbara Bush told the New York Times in 1992, during President George Bushs re-election campaign, that she supports legalized abortion and didnt think an amendment against abortion should be a part of the Republican Party platform.
The personal things should be left out of, in my opinion, platforms and conventions, she said at the time.
In April, Bush headlined a fundraising banquet for an Indianapolis crisis pregnancy center.
We are honored to welcome President George W. Bush, whose strong record on life issues demonstrates his belief that every life matters, Brian Boone, the Life Centers president, told LifeNews.com. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate life with a keynote address from a public servant who made the sanctity of human life a priority.
Boone credited Bush with compiling a stellar pro-life record and pointed out that he signed the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, Unborn Victims of Violence Act and Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act.
Bushs pro-life policies over eight years included the appointment of two pro-life Supreme Court Justices, an executive order barring federal funds to be used for abortion-related projects abroad, and a rule protecting federally funded health employees from taking part in abortion-related activities or other practices that conflicted with their religious views, he said.
While Bush compiled a lengthy pro-life record, Obama has promoted abortion and forced Americans to pay for abortions and embryonic stem cell research that destroys human life.
Legatus gave Bush the prestigious Cardinal John J. OConnor Pro-Life Award at its February event and last October, a Canadian pro-life group gave Bush the first pro-life award he has received since leaving office.
I find it creepy that Mrs. Bush kept her miscarried fetus in a jar to show family and friends. Is this common? I’ve never heard of anyone doing it before.
Thanks for sharing Mom...
The article states “which she had saved in a jar to bring to the hospital.”
Cognitive dissonance, I think.
It’s a special place in a persons head where two opposite thoughts can coexist: “I love children! I love my babies!” and “Oh, that? That’s just a fetus.”
Mrs Bush had a miscarriage at home, and was taking the fetus to the hospital as she was going to the hospital. She showed it to her son in a moment of emotional fragility.
The excerpt indicates she was preparing to take it to the hospital. Not keeping it around as a souvenir.
I think she must have saved it to take to the hospital so they could examine it, altho it's not really clear. I don't think she saved it as a souviner.
Healthy baby with no problems.
Hubby raced home and took her, the newborn and the afterbirth (in an enameled Le Creuset casserole) to the hospital.
I've never looked at my Le Creuset cookware the same since.
OK, that makes sense. In that case I’m grateful W had a chance to see that a fetus is a baby and not just a glob of cells.
Though it somehow failed to achieve the same effect on his mother.
I saw a video once of a woman who had been implanted with 4 embryos and all had taken. She did not want to raise four infants at one time but was willing to deal with twins. So her doctor offered a solution—selective reduction.
The video showed the ultra sound as the actual procedure was being preformed. A needle was jammed into the chest of the first fetus which arched it’s back backwards as the needle was shoved in to kill it. I couldn’t watch the second suffer the same fate. After the procedure, the doctor then tells the woman, in a congratulatory tone, “Let’s go see your children.”
So I wonder, because they did not show it, how she felt looking at two live fetus and two dead fetus in her womb. They probably did not show it for a reason.
It doesn’t say she kept it to show to family and friends. It says she put it in a jar to take to the hospital after she miscarried it. That’s not creepy, it’s typical procedure after a miscarriage to take the fetus along to the doctor’s if at all possible. I think it’s wonderful that she showed it to her son. So many parents want to protect their children from the realities of life, and in so doing, rob them of a deeper understanding than they could have otherwise.
... making a quick stop at the local Safeway along the way ....
She was taking it to the her Dr. My Dr. wanted to see it as well. They check that everything is there so they don’t have to go and ‘clean’it out. TMI.
EMT's are instructed to carefully collect, if at all possible, any ejecta so that the physicians are assured that nothing remains that could cause bleeding, infection, etc.
Not creepy, many years ago, almost 18 years, I miscarried
on a weekend, and was told to do the exact same thing
Barbara Bush did and to bring the jar to the hospital, which I did.
