What does Lepanto refer to? I know its a battle but I am not familiar with it.
Thanks in advance!
The Battle of Lepanto was a naval engagement which helped turn the tide of Islamic expansion into the Mediterranean. The Ottoman Empire had a large fleet while the Holy League had a much smaller one. This smaller fleet, by aggressively engaging, delivered a crushing defeat on the larger force, stemming Islamic seaborne conquest.
Item of historical note, one of the soldiers fighting with the Holy League, and Duke Don John of Austria, was a Spaniard, who later became quite famous, in his own right, in another field of endeavor. His name, Miguel Cervantes, author of "Don Quixote"...
the infowarrior
At Lepanto a ragtag Catholic navy destroyed the Turkish fleet and ended Islam’s reign as the world’s superpower.
The Battle of Lepanto in 1571 presents a wonderful example of good triumphing over evil and some of us enjoy drawing a clear parallel between that battle and this election.
10,000 Christian galley slaves were freed as a result of the Holy League’s devastating victory over the Ottoman Turks.
