Another way to look at it is that DNC credits Bush with Republican Victory. That Bush sure has some long coattails.

I didn't think he was distracted by the war as much as I thought he had (in his estimation and in the estimation of his advisors, such as Rove) expended all his political capital on the war and didn't have any left to spare for things like shutting down the border and fighting the rats to save the banking system.
But on the border issue, maybe you're right. Maybe he was doing exactly what he wanted on that. Which makes him a fool.
There is no such thing as national security without border security and Iraq was a war of national security.
