She got a cheap cap or crown. If she sprang for an extra couple of hundred bucks there wouldn’t be a black line. (Either that or tooth decay.)

I’ve got a couple like that, it’s a bridge.
Sometimes teeth just die (at least that’s what happened to me) and you have to replace.

Those are Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns. Not recommended for teeth in the front. The black lines occur when the gums recede and the underlying metal shows at the tooth-gum margin. She should replace them with all ceramic crowns, such as CEREC. No metal, no black lines.
