IRON MOUNTAIN, MI – Dr. Dan Benishek, candidate for Congress in Michigan’s 1st District, pledged that he would fight against any effort by the government to ration access to quality health care for seniors.
“As a general surgeon for nearly thirty years, I will not allow Gary McDowell — or any other government bureaucrat — to decide which of my patients will live and which will die,” Dr. Benishek stated. “The fact that Gary McDowell thinks that rationing health care is needed — particularly at the end of one’s life — is both scary and unacceptable.”
Dr. Benishek’s comments came in response to a video posted online of Gary McDowell speaking at a forum at Mancelona High School in the fall of 2009 in which he is discussing end of life care issues. Mr. McDowell explained his position by commenting, “[W]e’re not going to be able to provide all the other things in life that we need to do first as a society, because we are taking so much money for health care at the end of life and the reason is, because I’ve mentioned to you before, our whole health care system is based upon procedures, doing these things on real expensive gadgets and whistles and bells.”
“We only have so many resources out there,” Mr. McDowell added. “And we have to decide how we’re gonna allocate those resources.”
“It is frightening that Mr. McDowell would have such a position,” Dr. Benishek responded. “End of life care decisions are incredibly personal. As a physician, I believe very strongly that these difficult choices should be made by patients and their families, in consultation with their doctors. New medical technology has given millions of Americans the chance to live longer and better lives. These ‘procedures’ should be made more available, not ‘allocated’ by the government.”
“As a doctor, I took an oath to first do no harm. I wish Gary McDowell would do the same and explain to the voters what ‘other things in life’ he thinks ‘we need to do first’ before caring for our seniors,” Dr. Benishek concluded.

Physicians are in the main smart, diligent, ethical and stubborn folk whose profession is based on fighting the odds in order to buy time.
