Wow! When I was in CA 2 years ago, I was amazed at how high the price of gas was. Then I found out that there was a ~10% tax on everything you buy.
Oh no, the state is far worse than you realize. The state sales tax is actually only 7.25%, if I recall correctly, but then each county is free to add its own sales tax, which many do (usually about 1-2%). However, that is not why gas is so expensive in CA. It is so expensive because the state of California, in all of its communistic wisdom, has an additional tax of somewhere between 35-50 cents per gallon (I forget the actual number).
