WASHINGTON Amplified by the right-wing message machine, Republicans paint President Obama as an unyielding left-winger, an unreconstructed liberal who refuses to compromise. The presidents critics have turned the truth inside out: One of Obamas greatest political weaknesses has been his stubborn and unrequited love for bipartisanship.
The president has made some of his biggest mistakes trying to woo a GOP opposition that has committed itself to frustrating him at every turn. If he had ignored recalcitrant Republicans, for example, his health care legislation might have become law without months of damaging political drama.
In an interview last week in his West Wing office, David Axelrod, one of Obamas closest advisers, acknowledged that the administration had been surprised by the unified Republican resistance to the presidents agenda.
Well, I think we miscalculated, Axelrod said. We had the idea that, particularly in a time of national crisis, there would be more of an inclination to work together.

Somebody’s been drinking the bong water again.
The only time Democrats want to work with the Republicans is when their policies implode and they need a patsy.
Cynthia *ucker STAYS crazy.
Thats a great analogy!! Fits her to a T.
This is an important meme to remember here — liberals turn on their own ONLY when they think they’re not being liberal enough. Disastrously bad ideas, withering unpopularity, lies, immorality — none matter, just pushing the liberal agenda.
Specifically Arlen Spector, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. One third of that troika of idiocy left the party to join Obama (and will soon be gone, gone, gone!) while the other two may have actually realized that they are not immune to criticism and removal at their next election.
What a ridiculous, delusional statement. Obama and the Demcocrats made no effort to work with the GOP, unless you count trying to woo a few RINOs to vote for their far left, socialist programs, so they could claim “bi-partisonship” and share the blame for them.
In fairness, the Democrats were under no obligation to work with the GOP. They had strong majorities in both houses and the Senate and had every right to push their agenda without GOP support.
Where they went wrong was openly defying the clear will of a strong majority of the American people. Of course, they had the right to do that too, but it comes with a high price and the (first) bill is coming due on 11/2/10.
Cynthia Tucker is a twit. A liberal twit, but a twit just the same.
Bump!
Anytime I read her tripe, I am convinced McKinney is mentally ill. She really is delusional.
I meant to say Tucker, but you know, I could say the same about McKinney too. LOL
Tucker: The female Eugene Robinson.
If there were, it'd be struck down on the grounds that it discriminates against Democrats. ;)
