California gubernatorial candidates Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown debated tonight at Dominican University in San Rafael. The moderator was Tom Brokaw who raised the 'whore' comment with Brown.
Video of the exchange at Bay Area NBC

BROKAW: Mr. Brown you did attempt to reach out to the police union. The telephone message was left on. It's now a notorious part of this campaign. In which somebody in your campaign referred to Ms. Whitman as a "whore." A campaign spokesman then described that as "salty language" and apologized after a fashion. We've heard no outrage from you about the use of that kind of language which to many women is the same as calling an African-American the n-word. Have you been in charge of the investigation in your campaign to find out who is responsible for using that phrase?
BROWN: I don't agree with that comparison, number one. Number two, this is a five week old private conversation...
WHITMAN: Oooohh.
BROWN: ...picked up on a cellphone, uh, with a garbled transmission. Very hard to detect who it is. This is not, I don't want to get into the term and how it's used. But I will say the campaign apologized promptly and I affirm that apology tonight.
BROKAW: You're repeating it to Ms. Whitman?
BROWN: Yes I am. I do. I, it's unfortunate. I'm sorry it happened. I apologize.
WHITMAN: So Jerry, it's not just me, it's the people of California who deserve better than slurs and personal attacks. That's not what California is about. It is not our better selves. And I, um, think people know exact...I think every Californian, and especially women, know exactly what's going on here. And that is a deeply offensive term to women.
BROWN: Well, can I just interject? Have you chastised your chairman, Pete Wilson, who called Congress "whores" to the public sector unions?
WHITMAN: You know better than that Jerry. That's a completely different thing. The fact you are defending your campaign...
AUDIENCE: Heckles Whitman.
WHITMAN: The fact you are defending your campaign for a slur and, um, you know, a personal attack on me I think it's not befitting of California. It's not befitting of the office that you're running for.
BROWN: It's unfortunate. Private conversation. I'm not even sure it's legal because you have to get the consent of all the parties and there's lots of people talking so, I again, Ms. Whitman I'm sorry it happened. That does not represent anything other than things that happen in a campaign. But the issue there of course is pension reform and the fact that you got the endorsement of that union. I didn't because they said I'd be too tough on unions and public employee pensions and I'll take that.
WHITMAN: So that's actually...
AUDIENCE: Cheers Brown.
BROKAW: Admonishes audience to keep quiet.
Tape ends.
When a Company reaches a certain level, adjustments to the Business Model must be made to stay competitive. In my role as a Manager for a Fortune 500 Bank, I had to layoff 50 people in my unit when the decision was made to outsource their positions to save the company a substantial amount of money.
After the conversion was completed and the projected cost savings were confirmed, I received a year end bonus based on a percentage of the savings. Should I give that back?
When you are accountable to Stockholders, these things are always being reviewed and implemented if the financial impact is favorable to the bottom line.
The fact that Whitman received additional compensation as CEO is just a straw man Liberal argument. Are they implying that a Governor Whitman should not be able to trim the ranks of State Employees currently performing unproductive or duplicate tasks to save the Taxpayers money?
Meg was compensated by a Board of Directors that decided that her leadership and cost control measures increased Shareholder Value while maintaining a sound Business Model.
Meg did not give herself anything, she was compensated for meeting her Contracted Goals.
The Rats are using the same tactics against Fiorina. If Fiorina had not outsourced jobs overseas at the time, HP as a Company would not be in existence today. Shortsighted Liberalism does not meet the smell test, so don't fall into the us against them trap of class warfare.
The way I view it, I agree with the free market system. But when I see a very conservative friend telling me he is troubled by the bonus, it tells me something.
With the kind of disparity in wealth that is happening in this country, the free market system is going to crumble. I understand that company owners sacrafice and create jobs. I believe all that. I believe in the rewards that come from risk and delayed gratification.
But I see trouble coming for this country and it is going to come from a lot of people that are in very tough financial times that see a $120 million bonus as a problem.
We have a consumer finacial revolution going on in this country already. People are saying to themselves, if that is the way the game is played, screw the banks I’m walking away from my debt.
This friend of mine had a credit card and made the payments on time, never once late. They raised his rate from 3% to 18%. He said, “I was a good customer, responsible, paid on time, carried a balance and this is my reward.” He said forget it.
I’m way off subject maybe and maybe not making myself clear. The system as it is being run can’t sustain itself politically. It will take more now than what made it all work before. People thinking of taking $120 million bonuses need to control themselves. They are going to lead us into more than just a consumer financial revolution.
Its interesting to watch the DU trolls who trash Meg daily here disappear ONCE I bring out the facts about Moonbeam. Moonbeam is the MOTHER of the CA UNION/ PENSION CHAOS and he has the NERVE to state he will want to fix it.
We can't afford his FIX !
I AGREE.
Its a HUGE Mess .
Brown is a bag man for the unions.
The SEIU, ACORN, CNA, and the rest are out in full force here peddling his LIES and SMEARS.
They are getting ugly.
Glad we agree on that! Don’t let your conservative friends not vote for Whitman or Fiorina - the alternatives are too awful.
Ask your friend if they mind that MOONBeam has been cashing in on TWO STATE Pensions (our tax dollars)while he and his GAP Millionairess wife live in a multi million home in the Bay area???
I hear ya.
Sorry , I missed a word “ Meg does NOT own Ebay “ .
This huge SF lefty owns it.
But he became a billionaire thanks to her.
I'm certainly not a Brown troll. As to my comment, it's called discussion, something that seems to evade you.
You were posting Whitman was a Crook two days AGO. You were posting Whitman was a Crook two days AGO. Who are still trying to fool here . Brown troll Hey how is your Rick Scott trashing campaign ?? Scott is pulling ahead so you better get astroturfing him too .
I said no such thing about Whitman. And I never trashed Rick Scott, either.
Take your silly lies and go play in your sandbox.
If you think that says that the Dill’s act created the SEIU, I don’t know what to tell ya.
A remedial reading comprehension class would certainly be a good start.
Quit your lying and namecalling.
It’s not a “hole”.
The liberal propaganda machine did a good job of “getting liberal meat in the seats”.
Obummer and his minions do a good job filtering the audiences at his speeches/photo ops.
This kind of tactic is all the liberals have left. Lies, nothing more.
I don’t think that she was forced to sell, but maybe she chose to sell some.
With a huge portion of her wealth in eBay stock, that would be an appropriate thing to do.
I figured that she chose to cash in $120 million worth of options — which is a far cry from “paying oneself.”
The other half of the allegations in the ad, regarding spinning IPO shares, was indeed true.
I brought up the union pension thing to YOU. Weeks ago.
Sheesh, you have a short memory!
But SEIU's creation was not from the Dill's Act and much of SEIU's growth is independent of Government.

(snip) Jerry Brown's biggest fault was the people he hired and appointed to important posts and his role in the unionization of public employees. Hey Meg -- what about Rose Bird? And others. I haven't heard a peep about this from pubbies or the media. Campaigns are no longer about educating voters on issues and candidate positions....
You obviously didn't listen to either of the last two debates.
I hope Gov. Moonbeam doesn’t get to hold that office again. Judging by the audience reaction, most California voters can’t differentiate between calling a woman a whore and calling Congress a whore. Californians deserve every iota of pain they have brought upon themselves. I’ll be damned if I’ll sit still and see my tax dollars bail their lame asses out of the jamb they’re in.
eBay is a publicly traded company, owned by its shareholders.
Institutional investment funds and mutual funds hold the largest number of shares (over 500M shares)
Pierre Omidyar owns about 145M shares, Whitman owns about 20M shares, etc.
“FReepRegards”
That’s an interesting thing to say from a relative n00b.
1035rep’s link proved you wrong, too.
“No matter what accounting method one uses, however, it is wrong to say Whitman “paid herself” any of those amounts. Her compensation was approved by eBay’s governing board.”
I don’t think you are as ill educated as your posts would lead us to believe.
Oh, gee, how'd that happen? With the "whore" comment on nightly news and all? </s>
How about this logic?
If eBay is straitened enough by bad economic conditions, so much so that 10% of staff have to be let go, then how does the comp committee justify throwing millions at a CEO whose performance, had it been better, might have obviated the need for layoffs by adding value to the top line?
Tough times = no bonuses for anybody, or tokens at best for high performers. And $120 mil doesn't qualify as a "token". How's about that?
As a shareholder, I want my comp committee to show some sense of nod to reality.
