[This editorial was printed today in the Aiken Standard, newspaper "of record" for Aiken County, SC]
Sen. Jim DeMint is in the national news again.
What's remarkable is not what he said to get there - reiterations of remarks he made six years ago to our editorial board - but where he was when he resurrected them.
The public outcry against DeMint's position, that gays and unmarried pregnant women should not be permitted to teach our children, is old news; voters in South Carolina, because of or in spite of his position, elected him senator in 2004, after he made those remarks.
For the record, our editorial stance that DeMint's statements go too far, hasn't changed.
What caught our eye about the story was the Spartanburg dateline; Jim DeMint had returned to South Carolina.
This shouldn't be remarkable. DeMint is, after all, a native son running for re-election to the U.S. Senate. He should be stumping all across the state, explaining to the South Carolina electorate why he is best suited to represent us in Washington.
Surely that would be the case, if his Democratic opponent weren't the felony-indicted, all-but-unelectable cipher and perennial punchline Alvin Greene.
Facing certain re-election here, DeMint has chosen instead to spend his political capital elsewhere, He successfully endorsed Rand Paul's GOP Senate primary bid in Kentucky. He successfully endorsed - and financially backed, through the PAC he chairs, the Senate Conservatives Fund - Christine O'Donnell in Delaware. He appeared in Grand Rapids, Mi., to rally support for GOP gubernatorial candidate Pete Hoekstra.
DeMint is making a name for himself, nationally, as a kingmaker on par with Sarah Palin.
In fact, visiting the senator's campaign website, www.jimdemint.com, provides a main page that trumpets his views on firing the U.S. Congress and panicking D.C. politicians; a main page rife with opportunities to buy his book, purchase a T-shirt or otherwise donate to the "fight."
What's missing from that main page is any mention of South Carolina.
While Sen. Lindsey Graham and Rep. Joe Wilson were in Beaufort last week, working to ensure its Marine Corps Air Station would remain vital as the F-18s stationed there are phased out and replaced with new F-35s, DeMint was elsewhere. When Sen. Graham sought to bring $400,000 of federal money to study dredging the Port of Charleston, a project that would bring larger ships laden with more product through the state, DeMint was vocally opposed.
Frankly, we think Sen. DeMint is taking the voters of South Carolina for granted.
While we do not begrudge Jim DeMint his success on the national stage, we didn't hire him to be a conservative values rock star. We didn't hire him to oppose, or ignore, projects vital to the economy and infrastructure of South Carolina. We certainly didn't hire him to influence the voters in Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, Utah and Washington. We hired Jim DeMint to represent our vital interests in Washington, D.C.
We believe Jim DeMint will be re-elected in November; we just hope the junior senator from South Carolina can settle down and focus for the next six years.

Jim is running for reelection this November. If you like his philosophy, consider tossing him some bucks.
How about a Palin/DeMint ticket in 2012?
And this shows why Libtards are too stupid to be free. Let’s see, in politics “doing favors” is the same as extending credit in business. Anybody with a brain would know/be able to see that if the GOP retakes the Senate, SC via Jim DeMint will be cashing in.
Heh. I’d say having 8 or so Senators owing their victories in large part to DeMints efforts will serve S. Carolina just fine. I’m not seeing DeMint having trouble defending what his state needs in the Senate.
You betcha. Especially if DeMint becomes Speaker. If that happens it will be interesting to watch the Aiken Standard's reaction.
That seems highly unlikely.
GinaLolaB: How about a DeMint/Palin ticket in 2012? :)
I'd gladly vote for either one :-]
That would be one heck of a trick.
My wife of 27 years is from Akin County S.C. We have always referred to the Akin Standard as the Akin Sub-Standard paper.
Tel ya what, Mr. Editorial Board Writer...nominate somebody better than a court jester for the Dem candidate, and maybe you’ll have something to complain about.
I’m sure Senator DeMint views having to run against a bumbling fool who has no chance of being elected as a real blessing.
Why waste this time in SC? Why not lend his voice to getting other conservatives elected to the Senate? I certainly do not begrudge the fact that he is not, as the paper stated, “...stumping all across the state, explaining to the South Carolina electorate why he is best suited to represent us in Washington.”
I don’t understand why Joe Wilson (running and will be easily reelected) and Lady Lindsey Grahamnesty (not running till 2014, will NOT be reelected) got stuck into this. Makes no sense.
I hear the Dems have put up a really, really formidable candidate against him.
28 June 2010: No longer listed as a candidate on the South Carolina Democratic Party's website. That's from The Green Papers (heck of a web site) here.
16 June 2010: The South Carolina State Election Commission will not investigate Mr. Greene's nomination.
9 June 2010: The Democratic Party asks Mr. Greene to withdraw because of a pending felony charge.
. . . Sen. DeMint was fighting to prevent $2 billion in South Carolina taxpayer money from going to the federal government.
