Can skinflint Mitch Daniels win the presidency ?
Washington Examiner ^ | October 10, 2010 | MiCHAEL BARONE

It's an ornate office in Indiana's beautifully maintained mid-19th-century Capitol, but the 49th governor of Indiana, Mitch Daniels, is not dressed to match the setting. He's just returned from spending the night in Princeton, Ind., staying at a constituent's house -- as he often does around the state -- and he's dressed in a work shirt and jeans.

I've known Mitch Daniels since he was a staffer for Sen. Richard Lugar in the 1980s, and for years he struck me as one of the least likely candidates for public office. He's got strong, mostly conservative convictions; he doesn't suffer fools (and elected politicians) gladly; he doesn't care if others don't like him. All those characteristics were on display when he ran the Office of Management and Budget for George W. Bush between January 2001 and June 2003.

The thing I least like about Palin is that she is very polarizing.

You are buying the media image creation.

Polarizing politicians do not win 93% approval rates, and become the popular Governor in America, only a unifier can achieve that type of unity.

If he still wants to sell off our highways for unconstrained tolling (like he did in Indiana), then no thanks - I’ll take Obama over a person that demented.

I agree social issues are just as important for being a true conservative.

I have not seen any evidence that Mitch does not hold conservative principles on social issues. Yes, he did say that they need to take second row seat in favor of fiscal issues that will be the largest political battle in 2012. Don’t see a problem with that.

"Truce" is NOT mean to abandon.

Truce: a suspension of hostilities for a specified period of time by mutual agreement of the warring parties;

His statement was not to the democrats but to members of the party.

Again, I have addressed this very issue with Mitch. When was the last time you spoke with him over a cup of coffee on issues?

LOL read your own words, he unilaterally surrendered on conservatism.

He didn't even speak to Democrats, his call for surrender was a plea only directed at the conservatives, our answer is go to hell, we fight for conservatism, Daniels is out.

“Daniels is a Bush flunky & wants to ditch social issues under the false pretense that fiscal issues will solve the former. No thanks. He has no fire in the belly to do what’s needed in fumigating the Obama administration. And he is not telegenic. ... “

I 100% agree with you. No society that engages in mass killing of it’s own babies can hope to have a future, in God’s eyes, and therefore, as a consequence in reality! First things first. Fiscal responsibility for an immoral, Infanticidal society is an imbecilic concept!

We haven’t had coffee with him,, we are forced to watch his actions. He’s another Bush repub. What has he ever done for us?

And why would i want a truce, when i get the honesty, effectiveness, and passion i want from Sarah. This election is not meant to empower the insiders again.

Read my posts, he called to drop social conservatism from our current political agenda, as if rebuilding a conservative agenda at a later date, and trying to convince people in the future that we were only kidding when we dropped them for a few years is easily done.

Conservatives do not call for surrender on our fundamental issues and identity.

I know the words and more importantly I understand the words "for a specified period of time". What is so difficult about understanding what he said other than you're a Palin supporter?

When was the last time you spoke with Mitch on this "pretend" issue? Sorry Guy...you're clueless when it comes to the Governor.

> We need qualified candidates”

We have one (and only one).

Sarah Palin.

She is the only one that has tackled the issues, and built her platform brick by brick.

She has been investigated, attacked, demonized, and ridiculed by the opposition, and has come up solidly on top, and grows stronger day by day.

Mostly, she is the only one on our side that even understands the issues.

We haven’t had coffee with him,, we are forced to watch his actions.

We also have to look at how he is destroying all the momentum that we have built up over 30 hard years, as he runs against us, and dismisses our issues to the public by attacking them as divisive, and unimportant enough that they can be set aside, for the TRULY important stuff.

Daniels is part of that enemy force that promotes the idea that social conservatism is 'too right wing' for polite politics and normal people.

Lots of wishful thinking going on in this thread.

NOBODY outside of Indiana even knows who Mitch Daniels is.

Read posts 70 and 74, there is nothing “temporary” about running against conservatism and your own party platform.

Daniels declared war against conservatism and the party platform.

Well, duuu-uuuh. The MSM and the dems say that all the time, so it must be true. After all she doesn't like the Obamacrat policies.

Ergo: She is Polarizing.

*note to self* Figure how to make "polarizing" flash in large red letters.

> “ Mitch understands that if the financial problems are not addressed in a timely manner the social issues are moot”

.
Stupid canard.

The only things that government can do for the economy are cut taxes to the bone and then step aside.

The social issues are the meat that will decide the next presidential election, and that is where false Christians like Daniels fail flat.

The economy will be in full depression mode by 2012, and mostly inaction will be the best governmental policy after Obamacare has been ripped out of the way.

Recovery will be quick if government steps aside.
