I never took him seriously. Just thought he was a fool. The whole thug thing really did take me by surprise.
I was trying to make a joke. I see I failed utterly. When you said "He’s a criminal and a lying psycopath that just happened to end up in politics." I was humourously asking why one one would be surprised that a lying psychopath would end up in politics when it's almost a redundant description. ;-)
