The wife of US Representative John F. Tierney is poised to plead guilty tomorrow to federal tax charges for managing a bank account that her brother allegedly used to deposit millions of dollars in illegal gambling profits he raked in from an offshore sports betting operation based in Antigua.

Federal prosecutors filed documents that were unsealed today in US District Court in Boston charging Patrice Tierney, 59, who is married to the Salem Democrat, with four counts of aiding and abetting the filing of false tax returns by her brother, Robert Eremian, of St. John’s Antigua.

The shocking thing to me is that they identified the political party as “Democrat” in the second paragraph.

THAT is shocking!

But in the cozy back room of a modern house that once served as the Chinese Embassy, past the lazy dogs in the yard and the bicycles in the driveway, Bob Eremian was entertaining Americans in a different way.

It was two hours before the start of Sunday’s Super Bowl game in San Diego, and Eremian, in short pants and bare feet, was sitting in front of three computer screens, overseeing a sports betting operation that would take over 10,000 bets on the game before the day was over.

“They’re calling from all over the U.S. today,” he said, as the 25 telephone operators seated in front of him quickly logged bets into their computers. “That’s what people want to do,” Eremian said. “Bet on sports.”

Wagering on sports is illegal in the United States, except in Nevada and Oregon. But over the past two years, a small number of bookmakers have packed up their lists of customers and traveled south, along with some first-time bookies, to take refuge in tiny West Indies countries like this one.

Licensed by the local government and using advanced technology to communicate, set odds on games and record wagers, they have created hundreds of jobs for local residents and rapidly built an offshore sports book industry that gaming analysts say is taking in 1 percent to 5 percent of the $100 billion that is bet illegally on sports each year in the United States.

I loved the part about voters seperating spouse activity from candidate.

Ofcourse that doesn’t apply to Whitman,( hubby gave SSA letter to maid to take care of).

The TEA Party and GOP needs to make commercials of these ETHICAL members of Congress.

They can always use something like Nancy Pelosi bragging about ETHICAL the Democrats are, and then pictures and statements about Charley Rangel, this person, as well as the other Congress Critters who have ETHICAL problems (such as the Congress Critter from Dallas who gave away Scholarships to Family).

There is also the Congress Critter from California with Corruption about a bank and her husband...

The GOP has great stuff for Commericals this year -- they should take advantage of it...

The article mentions “federal prosecutors” so this is not a Republican version of an October surprise.

The only shock here is that more congressmen and their families aren't getting busted for running little schemes. They generally have to be pretty blatant to get caught.

managing a bank account that her brother allegedly used to deposit millions of dollars in illegal gambling profits he raked in from an offshore sports betting operation

That would do it. The husband is using the babe-in-the-woods defense, which is a load of crap.

He said she believed her brother’s earnings were from legitimate business

It's real believable that she wouldn't ask why her brother can't open his own bank account if he's a legitimate businessman making millions.

The wife of Massachusetts Congressman John Tierney has agreed to plead guilty to charges she helped her brother conceal what authorities say was an illegal offshore gambling business that generated millions of dollars.

Federal prosecutors said late Tuesday that 59-year-old Patrice Tierney is set to plead guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Boston to four counts of aiding and abetting the filing of false tax returns.

Tierney’s fugitive brother, Robert Eremian, and another sibling face charges including racketeering, money laundering and operating an illegal gambling business.

“I’m shocked!”

You’re shocked that DC is full of ‘rat crooks...and some reps, too?

What’s shocking to me is that the states are full of this garbage, too.

Hence...all of the deficits that threaten to drown the states.

Unions...

Sorry...that was OT. But pertinent. ;o)

Hudak has been keeping pace with Tierney’s fundraising all year (in truth, more of a testament to Tierney’s surprisingly poor fundraising). I hope that Hudak can come up with an eye-catching ad out of this.

I think that we will pick up MA-10 (with Jeff Perry), and MA-06 is our second likeliest pickup—it is wepl behind MA-10 in likelihood, but our chances just got a lot better.

The wife of US Representative John F. Tierney (political party unknown, but definitly not a Democrat; yep, definitly not a Democrat; whatever you do, don't even think for a minute this should in anyway negativly affect your opinion of Democrats or the Democratic party; in fact, just clear the word "Democrat" right out of your mind right now) is poised to plead guilty tomorrow to federal tax charges for managing a bank account that her brother allegedly used to deposit millions of dollars in illegal gambling profits he raked in from an offshore sports betting operation based in Antigua.
