US may abandon Pakistan-Afghan supply route

Upset over mounting terror attacks targeting the Nato/Isaf supply trucks travelling to Afghanistan via Pakistan, the high-command of the US-led allied forces stationed in Afghanistan has warned Islamabad that its failure to prevent such assaults could force them to abandon Pakistan as a major supply route for transportation of food and military supplies to Afghanistan.

According to diplomatic sources in Islamabad, the rising number of terrorist attacks on the Nato-Isaf convoys, coupled with the sudden crisis brought about by the recent floods in Pakistan, which have washed away several key bridges and highways, have compelled the high ups of the US-led allied forces to seek alternative supply routes for the international forces stationed in Afghanistan.

The story is flat wrong on the numbers.

No ammo or weapons go through Pakistan, and only about 25% of our fuel and about half of our food, and very few vehicles. BTW, we've lost 96 hummers to the locals/Taliban over the years and none of them are known to be operational now.

Pakistan is still an important route but we are nearly at a point of independence from them, hence the background to our increased military posture in Pakistan.

We know the Pak's can roadblock us for any political reason and have made great strides to develop the northern supply routes. We are developing rail capability from the west through Iran also.

The Pak's are quickly making themselves irrelevant logistically.

This is why the light-footprint strategy made a lot of sense. Now Obama has stuffed the Christmas turkey by sending in 30,000 additional troops (are they all there yet?) and making us vulnerable to this type of pressure. Nice going ‘General’ Obama.

I distinctly remember during 2007/8, when these attacks were rather prevalent that the Bush Administration had decided to reroute everything through Russia and Central Asia and had was working on the operational details.

Looks like the Pakistani Achilles heel of our supply chain has been dealt with.

But one does have to admire the Machiavellian skill of Pakistan so far since the Attacks in walking the ally or enemy tightrope.
