DAKAR, Senegal Bombs claimed by a Nigerian militant group linked to discontent over poverty in the oil-producing region killed at least eight people Friday at an independence day ceremony in the capital, Abuja. (snip) The militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, has been waging a low-level insurgency for much of the last five years against the oil industry that produces most of the countrys wealth. But Friday marked the first time it struck the heart of Nigerian power, aiming a clear blow at Mr. Jonathan, who is running for re-election next year, and signaling the failure of a government campaign to end the unrest.

It made me sad. I used to work with a handful of people from Nigeria, who were all here legally, all working long hours and going to school. Each one I met was a respectable person. Superior in every way to the African-Americans I worked with.
But then, I would guess the best, the brightest, those with true grit, are the ones who make it here. Nigeria becomes a ghetto of the world. The smart and able flee, leaving only the tyrants, the maniacs, and the dullards.
But then, good people must be born there all the time. It's all tribal bullshit that has religion laid on top of it, plus some political cold-war bipolar politics. As the old man described Woodstock, "It's a shitty mess."
