Autos would get up to 62 mpg under US plan

WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Automaker fleets would have to achieve substantially higher fuel efficiency -- between 47 and 62 miles per gallon -- by 2025 under a preliminary plan to further slash U.S. gasoline use that was released by the Obama administration on Friday.

Gasoline and electric hybrid vehicles and electric cars would play a crucial role in meeting the higher-range targets, according to the analysis crafted by federal environmental and transportation regulators.

"We must, and we will, keep the momentum going to make sure that all motor vehicles sold in America are realizing the best fuel economy and greenhouse gas reductions possible," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.

The auto industry is wary of any mandates that would increase costs or adversely affect production schedules for passenger cars and light trucks, which include sport utilities, vans and pickups.

BTW something is wrong if you are only getting 14 mpg in your Sierra. We have two and they get well over 18.

1999? to 2005 TDI Jettas are easily capable of achieving 50 mpg on a regular basis.

I did quote the listed number for the 170hp 2.0l diesel, but that appears to be the only thing available in the US. The 103hp 1.6l diesel elsewhere gets 50mph.

I live in the mountains and have a 4 mile dirt road to get home. It is 4x4 which knocks some millage off. Those clown cars could not get me home year round.

EPA killed the VW diesel because they said it polluted. I have smoke form the National Park forest fire they will not put out and they say I pollute?

I have two 2005 Jetta 1.9L TDI manual trans s/w that get 50mpg in rural/highway driving.

They were rated at 47 highway. You just have to keep them under ~75mph. Being turbocharged, they have sea level performance in the mountains and can pull fairly high grades in 5th at or above the speed limit.

Never mind. I just looked at the Coronet and Max Wedge specs. Seems they put just about everything in the Coronet but the Max Wedge.

I have a better idea: it’s called “freedom”. Let’s buy the cars we want and enforce the Constitution, which prohibits Congress from legislating in such matters.
