IMO, Sobran jumped the shark about 20 years ago. Prior to that I enjoyed his work, especially in National Review. After that, not so much.
I often wondered if, in his later years, he might have been plagued with Alzheimer’s. The change in him was not subtle.
So many brilliant people are lost to Alzheimer’s in their last years.
