Ravi may be able to tape his own phonecall messages, but if someone else’s phonecalls were taped using the same phone it would be just as much of a crime.
The difference here, as his attorney will undoubtedly argue, is that the room - unlike a phone call intended for one recipient - was a common area and that the roommate knew there was a camera.
You may have no idea your phone is being tapped, but this webcam was plainly visible (I don't know if it was, but the lawyer will likely argue it).
