NEW JERSEY (WPIX) — A freshman at Rutgers University is believed to have committed suicide after he was secretly taped by two other students during a sexual encounter, police said. The video was allegedly broadcast on the internet.

I wonder, if this had never been reported to the police, if the roommate would have committed suicide. After all, the story was national news well before the suicide and was already the subject of more than one FR thread.
Can’t see the kids getting more than probation, if they’re first-time offenders.

Did you see roses of sharon’s comment above? I quoted it. There is a high rate of suicide among homosexuals in Switzerland. They were not all filmed in sex acts which were put on the internet.
On the other hand, a crime was commited when the two secretly taped him and broadcast it. That common sense flew out the window does not excuse the actions of the other two.
I got the impression with a post from you awhile back you felt he got his just deserts and no harm outside his own doing was done.

Ravi and Molly would have known that posting the video would destroy this kid. Look at the kid’s picture. He looks like 12 year old nerd.
They are evil bullies. What he did or his sexual orientation was not an issue. This was a set up to destroy this kid.

I have run across a few Ravis and Mollys in my life. One “Ravi” murdered a girl because his family had money - he got away with it.

Carley, not too many years ago, colleges had separate dorms for men and women. They had curfews, rules, dorm leaders for supervision, and guests were limited. Parents had these regs in place because they understood human nature, and the weaknesses of young people. Their sons and daughters were at college for an education, not a social experiement.
Taking your words, “violating someone else’s privacy, their space”, those were set on a death march when the safe guards were broken down.
My son is a homosexual. He was on the streets less than a year when he acquired full blown AIDS. He came home. We took him in and poured every means of love we could. Took him a year to get on his feet. He left. Been gone about 10 years. He takes every opportunity to spew hate, and humiliate us. He accuses me of being homophobic. I’m telling you this so, hopefully, you will understand what I meant when I responded that if he were homophobic he would not have AIDS.
Homosexuality has been referred to as “slow suicide.” I can tell you it’s a real killer for the family to watch our son, and brother on this self destructive spiral.

No. The other two young people broke the law. I can't imagine what the excuse was for the webcam. There is no excuse for broadcasting it.
All 3 young people made awful choices with one making the ultimate final choice.
The kid was a band nerd. Just because other kids upload videos has no bearing on this case. No one asked this kid’s permission to video whatever he was doing let alone make it public.
They knew he was weak. I hope someday in your work life or other activities - you run into a Ravi or Molly. You will understand when it happens. What they did was eivl.

I know about bullies.
What they did was wrong, and I have never said otherwise.
It was not, however, something that warrents years in prison. And I do not believe for a moment that they thought he would kill himself.
