NEWS ALERT! Brain-Injured Wife Goes Without Food or Water for Seven Weeks

September 17, 2010 (Statement from Terri's Life & Hope Network) - It has been 49 days since Trisha Duguay has gone without any food or water after her feeding tube was removed. Her husband made this decision shortly after Trisha had unsuccessful surgery for a brain tumor that was discovered just after the couple was married.

The family has started a Facebook page to lend support to Trisha and her family titled, "From Bride to Angel." So far, over 4,000 people have supported the family.

While what is happening to Mrs. Duguay is not receiving a lot of media attention, Terri's Life & Hope Network expresses concern with the manner in which some media outlets are portraying the situation, treating Trisha's prolonged death and going without food and hydration-for over 7 weeks now-as an act of compassion.

I think it is important to be reminded that dying this way is not compassionate, peaceful or pleasant. My family witnessed, first hand, something quite the opposite. Terri went through almost two weeks without food and water before she died, and it was heartbreaking. Her death was cruel and barbaric and she suffered horribly. We must continue to educate the general public that food and water is basic and ordinary care and despite ones intentions, it does not change the nature of the act.

Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network was established by the surviving family members of Terri Schiavo to protect the rights of people with disabilities. It has communicated and supported with more than 1,000 families, and has been involved in hundreds of cases since Terri's death-families who have loved one's living with brain injuries.

“Physicians are finally starting to acknowledge that the organ transplant industry is not nearly as altruistic as it claims.”

A step in the right direction.

I and everyone I know refused testing while pregnant. No sense in it if you’re not going to abort, was my thinking.

Sick, twisted people can kill without traditional weapons. They can kill with the help of the medical community. Surprised that these blatant acts against civil rights are occurring in the south.

WHERE ARE THE GEORGIA FREEPERS? They should call it murder if they can't do anything else about this. Is Georgia a democrat state? Anyway, they have some weird cults in Georgia too.

Organ harvesting is dependent upon the bad luck of individuals. The motor vehicle accident fatalities has gone down. I wonder what effect that will have on this business. They still go for the eyes from cardiac and overdose patients. They will take whatever they can. The operations are expensive but the organs are free. Talk about a level playing field - not.

I won't vote for Rick Scott. HCA hospitals froth at the mouth imo over organ donors. Won't let Medicaid patients in unless they are supposedly brain dead. They'll take Medicaid patients for organ donatiosn but not to save them. This happened here in Death Central, Pinellas County. Medicaid patients: hospitals want your organs but don't want to treat you! (Pinellas County perspective).

If she had unsuccessful brain surgery, why starve her to death ahead of time? It’s like killing her so she won’t die of her illness. That makes no sense at all. This case is about murder v. natural death. This is inducing death as opposed to making her comfortable. This is torturing her when she needs comfort. Georgia sucks like Florida.

“Medicaid patients: hospitals want your organs but don’t want to treat you!”

A good way to get your organs is if they don’t treat you, but I’m guessing that’s your point.

I would never sign an organ donor card, but I told my husband that I would trust his judgment, if anything ever happened.

Congressman Paul Ryan Latest to Call For Truce on Pro-Life, Social Issues

Washington, DC -- Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin became the latest potential presidential candidate and Republican with a national profile to call for a "truce" on social issues. He joins Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and Mississippi Gov. Hailey Barbour, who called for Republicans to back down on pro-life issues.

One man's personal story of how dangerous the culture of death is.

Thread by Headline Bistro.

Not Letting Dad Die

“The fact that you are reading this indicates you escaped the abortion holocaust. But don’t relax yet. We are all candidates for the growing euthanasia movement.”

These oft-repeated words of Msgr. William B. Smith, one of the Church’s best moral theologians until his death last year, came to mind as my father lay in the emergency room and a grave-faced doctor called me, my brother and our mother aside for a consultation. Since this was a top-rated yet secular hospital, I was already reviewing in my mind all I knew about Church teaching regarding “ordinary” and extraordinary” care. But I was not prepared for the ease with which this doctor suggested that we let my dad die peacefully.

My father (still living, thank God, at age 83) suffered a bad fall at home in late August and was rushed to the hospital across the street, where he underwent surgery for a broken femur. He then went to a Catholic rehabilitation facility, where he was progressing slowly in physical therapy when he developed respiratory problems that landed him in the emergency room of another hospital.

So there we were – with my dad in pain, barely breathing and unable to speak – being pulled aside by an important-looking specialist, as doctors, nurses and interns rushed in and out of the room. He assured us that dad was “very sick,” and tried to bring us into his confidence by adding, “But you already know that.” I thought to myself: We do not know that; no one has told us anything definite yet. In a voice that seemed more rehearsed than sincere, he said that we could treat dad “aggressively” (which sounded rough in his throat) or opt for “comfort care” (which sounded warm and fuzzy). This is a decision point, he stated. Since my dad does not have an advanced medical directive, we would have to decide whether to insert a breathing tube (aggressive) or simply keep him warm, clean, fed and comfortable until … well … nature took its course.

Wow! No one had told us even what was wrong with dad or how serious his condition was, and already this M.D. was suggesting that we let him slip away with “comfort care.”

“What kind of doctor are you?” I demanded, trying not to sound too insulting. I thought he might be the appointed euthanasia specialist, and was shocked to learn that he was the head of the intensive care unit.

“Well, if you’re in intensive care, don’t you think you should treat him intensively?” I said, again trying not to sound too critical.

Of course, he assured, this is the family’s decision. He mentioned something about New York state law and concluded, “Are we all agreed then on inserting a breathing tube?” My mother, my brother and I all agreed. “You can always change your mind as we go along,” he reminded us. Then he offered a final warning: When people this age fall down and have complications after surgery, lots of bad things usually happen. Somewhere in his flurry of words we heard the term “quality of life.” My brother told him that our dad had rarely gone out of his apartment in the past four years, so his “quality of life” was not very exciting to begin with. “If he spends the next few years in a wheelchair doing his crossroad puzzles and watching ‘Jeopardy’ that will be good enough for us,” my brother said, again trying not to insult.

It was not a pretty sight as they stuffed breathing and feeding tubes down my father’s throat. They drew the curtain so we couldn’t watch. But my dad surprised them all and got off the respirator in three days. He’s breathing fine on his own and being treated for an infection that is going away. He’s still a little confused and sees people in the room who aren’t there, but the doctor says these hallucinations may be from the trauma of the past month and being confined to a bed for days on end. We pray he’ll be out of the hospital soon since they are finding fewer and fewer reasons to keep him.

I often think how different things could have been if family members were not so attuned to the tentacles of the culture of death, or if a couple of sons were more interested in their inheritance than in seeing their father living with the high-quality love of family and friends. And what if an elderly spouse, already stressed and confused by the whirl of the emergency room, unwittingly agreed that “comfort care” sounded better than being “aggressive” because no one wants to see a loved one suffer? Even my mom could have agreed to something she really didn’t want in the rush of the moment.

I won’t mention the name of the hospital because other than that one incident in the emergency room, my dad has received great and compassionate care. But I want to thank the late Msgr. Smith, for warning so often about the growing euthanasia ethic, which now has cast a pall over the practice of medicine everywhere.

Of course this only matters if the Tea Party embraces life.

Planned Parenthood Scared by Tea Party Success

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 23, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In addition to discontent with out-of-control spending and government expansion, the American Tea Party movement is motivated by a strong devotion to the right to life of the unborn - something that appears to have caught the pro-abortion establishment, including Planned Parenthood, off-guard.

In a Facebook post Monday, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America expressed frustration at the burgeoning popularity of thoroughly pro-life candidates who have shot to stardom thanks to Tea Party momentum.

"It's easy to laugh at some of the crazy statements made by the newest Republican U.S. Senate candidate, Christine O'Donnell and others running on extreme anti-abortion platforms," wrote the group. "But did you know that the day after O'Donnell's primary victory in Delaware, she raised $1,000,000 online?"

The grassroots Tea Party movement, while largely dismissed by mainstream media and Democrat leaders early on - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi famously wrote off the movement as "astroturf" – has grabbed the attention of both parties after Tea Party senate candidates snatched the GOP nomination in seven states earlier this month.

The Republicans' "Pledge to America," a document released Thursday outlining a congressional agenda for the party, clearly aimed to please Tea Partiers. Party leaders, distancing themselves from "politicians in Washington," promised to shrink government, reform Congress, and in general facilitate "listening to the American people and fielding their concerns and ideas for turning things around."

In its statement, PPFA lamented that the Tea Party has ushered in "a groundswell of support across the country for these anti-choice candidates." "They're everywhere, raising money and support," it said, and urged supporters to help the abortion giant "fight them, stop them, and defeat them."

On Wednesday, the Washington Examiner noted that the Tea Party's impact in the upcoming midterm elections will mean trouble for pro-choice incumbents, particularly those among the GOP.

Examiner columnist Timothy P. Carney noted that the four top casualties of Tea Party furor - Lisa Murkowski, Mike Castle, Charlie Crist and Arlen Specter - were all pro-choice members or former members of the Republican Party. In contrast, all of the successful Tea Party candidates for Senate are strongly pro-life.

'Planned Parenthood Aborts African Americans': New Mass Media Campaign

AUSTIN, Texas, September 23, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new mass media campaign is hoping to shed light on Planned Parenthood’s racist roots and continued targeting of black communities.  The PPAbortsAA campaign (“Planned Parenthood Aborts African Americans”) is aimed at getting the message out to a wide audience through billboards in large cities and TV ads on popular channels.

“When you look at the numbers, it’s absolutely astounding the lie that’s been given to African Americans - that this is really good for them,” said Kimberly Speirs, a spokesperson for PPAbortsAA.org.

African American babies are three times more likely to be aborted than white babies, according to data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control.  Since Roe v. Wade in 1973, the black population in the U.S. has been reduced by over 25 percent.

Planned Parenthood is accused of targeting black communities because 62-78% of their facilities are in minority neighbourhoods, depending on how the data is interpreted.

PPAbortsAA.org notes that this targeting of blacks was part of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger’s plan from the beginning.  “Colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated,” said the famed eugenicist and leader of the Negro Project, which was designed to curtail the black population.

The campaign organizers have been able to get their ads on BET (Black Entertainment Television), and they are available through their website, but other mainstream media outlets in New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Houston have refused to run them.

“It looks like the mainstream media is more interested in protecting Planned Parenthood than they are in educating African American women about the truth of abortion,” said Speirs.

She said it is clear from Planned Parenthood’s own statistics that they favor abortion over other options.  She noted, for example, that in 2007 they aborted 305,310 babies in the U.S., but only made 4,912 adoption referrals.

“Most women who are abortion-minded, they don’t want abortion, they just don’t know what else is out there,” she said.  “Once you let them know all the positive, hopeful, beautiful alternatives available for them ... they almost always choose life.”

“It’s so heartbreaking that so many African American lives have been snuffed out because of the deception that they’ve been sold,” said Speirs.  “We just think that they want to know the truth about this issue.  I think Afircan American women primarily want to know that they and their babies are being targeted.”

Trisha Rushing Duguay - Rest in Peace

Thread by PetroniusMaximus.

Bride in coma, 27, dies after surviving 8 weeks

For Trisha Rushing Duguay, tragedy arrived suddenly. Death was less hurried.

On Friday morning about 9 a.m., four months after taking her wedding vows, Trisha quietly passed away in hospice, her husband and parents by her side. Just 27 years old, she had continued living, remarkably, for eight weeks after her husband and family had, according to her wishes, removed her feeding tube.

40 Days for Life Launches in Record 238 Locations around the World

September 22, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A record 238 locations in the US, Canada, Australia, England, Northern Ireland and Denmark are participating 40 Days for Life campaigns of prayer and fasting from today, September 22, through to October 31.

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life effort that consists of 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, 40 days of peaceful vigil in front of abortion clinics, and 40 days of community outreach.

This unified effort has seen more than 350,000 people joined together in an historic display of unity to pray and fast for an end to abortion.

More than 11,500 church congregations have participated in the 40 Days for Life campaigns.

The campaigns have resulted in at least 35 abortion workers quitting their jobs and walking away from the abortion industry, six abortion facilities completely shutting down following local 40 Days for Life campaigns, and documented reports of at least 2,811 lives that have been spared from abortion.

In addition to the babies, nearly 3,000 women have been spared from the suffering, trauma and regret that come with the decision to abort one's child.

After witnessing tremendous success by the 40 Days For Life program in the United States, Campaign Life Coalition brought it into Canada for the first time 2007, holding the nation's first 40 Day vigils in Ottawa, Ontario and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This fall, people of faith and conscience have mobilized in 9 Canadian cities for the seventh coordinated 40 Days for Life campaign.

The Canadian cities hosting the 40 Days for Life campaign this fall are: Calgary, Alberta; Edmonton, Alberta; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Sudbury, Ontario; Perth, Ontario; Ottawa, Ontario; Montreal, Quebec; Moncton, New Brunswick; Halifax, Nova Scotia.

A series of 40 prayers that can be used during the 40 Days for Life campaign is available online here.

40 Days for Life Campaign -- [September 22-October 31]

THREE ELEMENTS

Constant vigil

40 Days for Life in Flagstaff, Arizona

The visible, public centerpiece of 40 Days for Life is a 40-day, round-the-clock prayer vigil outside a Planned Parenthood center or other abortion facility in your community.

Those who are called to stand witness maintain a peaceful and educational presence.

This 24-hour-a-day presence send a powerful message to the community about the tragic reality of abortion. It also serves as a call to repentance for those who work at the abortion center and those who patronize the facility.

If you do not have an abortion facility or Planned Parenthood office in your town, you can still conduct 40 Days for Life. However, you will need to select a different location which has some strategic significance ... perhaps near city hall, a courthouse, or a highly visible intersection.

Community outreach

40 Days for Life in Greenville, South Carolina

During 40 Days for Life, the pro-life message is proactively taken to every corner of your community. This can identify hundreds, or even thousands, of pro-life supporters.

A door-to-door petition and education drive reaches out to every household in your town or city. Informational flyers are distributed in neighborhoods to raise awareness about the local crisis of abortion. Citizens are invited to sign a petition of support for the sanctity of human life, and people are given the opportunity to visibly show their support for 40 Days for Life by wearing wristbands, placing signs in their yards, or displaying bumper stickers on their vehicles.

These people can then be encouraged to pray and join in local pro-life efforts.

Church involvement begins by meeting with local pastors, other church leaders, and members of different congregations. The Body of Christ is invited to pray together and participate in 40 Days for Life, uniting in one focused mission that can save lives and make an eternal impact.

Media outreach is conducted through carefully targeted news stories, talk shows, editorials, and letters to the editor. This enables you to get the pro-life message out to many people who would never see the inside of a local church.

If your community has a college campus, many students can be impacted through an intense 40-day campus outreach. This can consist of flyer raids, sidewalk chalking, petition drives, table displays, and much more.

Local leadership with 40 Days for Life

40 Days for Life in Halifax, Nova Scotia

40 Days for Life is primarily a local campaign. Yes, there is a national team that provides information, resources and encouragement, but all campaigns are based at the local level. Each community knows best when it comes to countering the damage abortion has caused in each individual city and town.

No one is appointed as a local 40 Days for Life leader; in each community, someone must step up and accept the challenge.

The campaign is also a group effort. There needs to be a main coordinator, but there is a whole level of duties and responsibilities that must be filled in addition to the director's position:

  • Prayer coordinator
  • Vigil coordinator
  • Outreach coordinator
  • Event coordinator
  • Church coordinator
  • Communications coordinator
  • And possibly others, depending on your local needs.

A line from Scripture comes to mind: "Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will." Please pray for discernment and guidance. 40 Days for Life won't happen without somebody. "Somebody" could be you!
