The older I get the more I’ve learned that everything worth knowing in life has come from two places, the Bible and Cowboys.
Charley: “Well you may not know this, but there’s things that gnaw on a man worse than dying.” From the movie ‘Open Range’
“I wont be wronged..I won’t be insulted, and I won’t be laid a hand on. I don’t do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.”
John Bernard Brooks (speaking)
From the Movie
The Shootist
1. Live each day with courage.
2. Take pride in your work.
3. Always finish what you start.
4. Do what has to be done,
5. Be tough but fair.
6. When you make a promise keep it.
7. Ride for the brand.
8. Talk less say more.
9. Remember somethings aren’t for sale.
10. Know where to draw the line.
From the book ‘Cowboy Ethics’ by James P. Owen
There is a lot of truth in cowboy philosophy as outlined by you. If it weren’t for the scarcity of women in the lives of cowboys, their world would have been pretty close to perfect. I try not to think about how they dealt with the near absence of women.
