Rebel Jim DeMint sparks GOP Senate civil war

South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint accidentally walked into a room full of lobbyists Wednesday morning and declared that “Republicans are not prepared to take over the Senate,” according to people in the room.

Some Republicans agree — and say he may be part of the reason why.

Senate Republicans are now even more embroiled in an intraparty civil war in which DeMint has been the lead rebel, and the victory by conservative Christine O’Donnell over establishment favorite Rep. Mike Castle in Delaware only deepened GOP divisions that could haunt Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell well into next year.

Behind closed doors Wednesday, Republican senators tried to assess the damage. Several senators at the lunch, including Scott Brown of Massachusetts, raised concerns that the party has sent a message that it had no room for moderates, even from left-leaning states, according to people familiar with the exchanges. And others expressed frustration that the GOP had essentially given away a pivotal seat that Castle could have won.

DeMint was pressed by several of his colleagues at the closed-door session Wednesday to pony up money from his high-spending political action committee to boost O’Donnell’s chances against Democrat Chris Coons, who already leads by double digits in a race that was a Republican lock had Castle won.

“In other words, put your money where your mouth is,” said a senior Republican official, who characterized the exchange as cordial.

DeMint agreed that he would — and tried to play the role as a peacemaker.

Too late for all that nonsense. Progressives, liberals, mushy moderates, Log Cabineers, RINOs and that crew will only drive us over the cliff at 75 mph, rather than Mr. Obama & the Democrats 120mph.

If “moderate” Republicans vote for Obama’s agenda, what's the difference if a Democrat is elected to that position?

In the name of bipartisanship?

Screw that.

I think GOP leadership is truly afraid of having someone like DeMint as majority leader. Which is why I contributed to the SCF this evening.

Maybe the Republicans aren’t. Conservatives ARE.

The GOP died last night. Good riddance.

We The People want actual representation in DC.

You’re exactly right, but I don’t see Jim DeMint saying that.

I don’t think that even he dares admit the truth.

Rebel Jim DeMint sparks GOP Senate civil war>>>>>>>>>

There is no war
Very simple
Jim Demint has a large fund raising machine and war chest that is used exclusively for conservative candidates. I’ll bet many big donors are sending money here instead of the RNC and idiot Steele. Bypassing the RNC.

John Cornyn heads the Republican’s Senate Campaign committee and is more middle of the road as to who they help and donate to

There is rivalry but Demint and Cornyn are both funding Republican candidates. This “war” is ginned up media liberals

For heaven’s sakes, they don’t need to worry about taking over—we will help them out. If they think we have hounded the progressives, wait till they take over and they see us breathing down their necks.

Brownie,Lindsey,Gregg etc....SHUT UP.

Right. Because he wasn't planning on doing that. LOL

Senator Kyl? Based on the actions of the leadership I agree with DeMint. You aren't ready to lead until you either leave the Senate or get religion as it were.

To Politico I say must be nice be nothing but a mouthpiece for frightened egocentric losers in the GOP.

DEMint...keep up the good work.

She’s not a Senator. This is about the Senate caucus. So no, she isn’t.

There is no civil war in the Senate.

That Sarah didn’t bring about.

According to DeMint. He speculating they may not be ready to lead as voters expect of them and from the quotations in that article from some of the caucus there is cause to question their readiness.

His position (and mine) is that they are being given a second chance and if they screw it up this time they won’t get another one.
