Like the Vatican he is overstating the case to try to avoid the gruesome outcome that may be the Islam way
They are doing it in response to FEAR and INTIMIDATION. They are appeasing the enemy - and that shows weakness.

How ridiculous! The Council is speaking as part of the inter-religious dialog that it has been commissioned for.
This is where the whole ‘judge not’ statement comes in: interpreting motives is best left to God.
