Obama co-sponsored the Hilal food act.
It also specifically defines the term "Halal" as food "prepared under and maintained in strict compliance with the laws and customs of the Islamic religion including but not limited to those laws and customs of zabiha/zabeeha (slaughtered according to appropriate Islamic code), and as expressed by reliable recognized Islamic entities and scholars."
Looks like a violation of church/state separation; fraudulent claims that food was "halal" could have been procurement both civilly and criminally under existing law, this serves to "establish" a special place for Islam. And such a law was totally unnecessary (except for helping to "establish" Islam's special place) since Moslims could have set up their own certifying organization or organizations to provide seals or stamps of approval; misuse of which could be prosecuted using federal trademark law or prosecution for fraud in state civil and criminal courts.
