Visalia, Calif. • A Mormon church official was shot dead between services on Sunday, and less than an hour later, the man suspected of the crime also died after a shootout with police.
Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Visalia, southeast of Fresno, died after being shot in his office, said Visalia police chief Colleen Mestas.
Soon after the first shooting, a caller identified himself to police as the shooter. Police responded, and there was a confrontation with several shots exchanged, said Mestas.
The suspect was hit multiple times. He was taken to nearby Kaweah Delta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified yet. No officers were injured, Mestas said.
Tulare County sheriff’s deputies are taking over the investigation of the shootout involving the police officers. The sheriff’s department did not immediately return calls for comment.
Visalia police continue to investigate Sannar’s shooting, but have not identified a motive.

Note that the article did not say he was an ex- member -- but was a member.
Now, if it's just coming out that he resigned his membership, that doesn't necessarily mean he was dumped from the Mormon church rolls. You know & I know that often takes a lengthy process; and sometimes the Mormon church isn't the one "pushing" people off the rolls...depends on person -- immoral lifestyle or critic of Mormon church or leadership, for example -- and who's administrating it all.

Well, Resty, I blame the last two church shootings on the perpetrators' mental issues; not the victims.
What I find interesting is the constant 24/7 PR mode Mormons engage in...image this; image that.
I remember one FREEPER forum after the Colorado Springs church shooting a few years back...I didn't make a big deal of it, but in one matter-of-fact sentence I happened to mention that the shooter in that crime was also a former Mormon. (A Mormon convert who then turned around & left the Lds church; please note that shooter also dabbled in the occult)
Upon mentioning that, a few posters went ballistic, asking me what was I implying. (I wasn't implying anything)
I mean, come on. Killers obviously have mental issues which take precedence over anything else, including group identities...just like all those dozens of Mormons behind the 1857 massacre, IMA.

I didn't even read KSL. I read the DesNews. And the DesNews simply said: KSL.com reported that the LDS Church confirmed Kenneth James Ward was a member.
So stop blaming me if Trent Toone of the DesNews didn't give a more complete accounting.
All I knew, as of yesterday afternoon, was that this guy "was a member". (That's what Toone & the 'News told me)

At any rate, it appears that you misread WAS as being in the present tense. Or, as you pointed out, the editor possible messed up.
Either way, the statement came out yesterday, so this is old news that he’s not been a member since 2004.
Mike Ward went on to say his brother had been shunned by the Mormon church at one time.
Now the brother of the 47-year-old Kenneth Ward does not say why but after reading

Well from my experience I know the Church does not shun
but if someone wants to do you harm
who had a falling out or hates the Church
normally the LDS will still main cordial towards them.
but if an x member or anti who wants to do you harm it is best to stay away from he/she as so not to provoke he/she.
I never said any thing about who was shot only those who try to accuse the Church for shunning with out a good cause.

Yes, once it becomes official. I’ve had phone calls from Church headquarters trying to track down membership records so they can determine status and membership. There is a procedure that is followed.
Are you trying to claim the church is lying and he’s on the rolls of the church?
