Visalia, Calif. A Mormon church official was shot dead between services on Sunday, and less than an hour later, the man suspected of the crime also died after a shootout with police.
Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Visalia, southeast of Fresno, died after being shot in his office, said Visalia police chief Colleen Mestas.
Soon after the first shooting, a caller identified himself to police as the shooter. Police responded, and there was a confrontation with several shots exchanged, said Mestas.
The suspect was hit multiple times. He was taken to nearby Kaweah Delta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified yet. No officers were injured, Mestas said.
Tulare County sheriffs deputies are taking over the investigation of the shootout involving the police officers. The sheriffs department did not immediately return calls for comment.
Visalia police continue to investigate Sannars shooting, but have not identified a motive.

You are as guilty as your peers on this thread.

Well that is the direction you would like it to seem...
keepping things in context should be the mission!
Gee for years many of you have posted railings against the Church and only recenly many have said how they want to destory the Church and leaders that it was evil etc.
None, see no way to agree to disagree it is antis way or the highway!
and when something like this happens that the LDS are not to wonder about all of the anti LDS stuff across the interestnet if it wasnt one of those posters?
They might even visted here on FR who knows???
None of FR antis have been very thoughtful during times of tragedties only it seems another opportunity to step on the LDS beliefs
This man was a former anti member and like a scab he would not leave it alone keep picting at it, which sad to say is what most who oppose the Church continue to do...
As how I try to live now I would try not to post those things I am aware now I must not look back like Lots wife it will do not good only continue to stir the pot I really need to be on the Lords side and that is by doing His will and striving to keep His Commandment.
Colofornian says:what church doesnt rally around the victims with love, compassion, forgiveness and kindness?
Saundra Duffy says: None that I know of
And there we have it according to you people who leave lds are scabs. How loving and kind (roll eyes)
I would bet real money that the so called anti mormon slurs were really anti mormonISM slurs. In order for the slurs to be anti mormon they would have to be specifically against a person, nothing in your link indicates that.
Amzing reply svcw
...he only shot the Mormon Bishop so it was not against Mormons!
Are you a lawyer or something? You’re parsing up a storm !...magritte
Finally you got something correct.
The killer had a long history of hating Mormons and threatening to do what he finally did. It is just so sad.
We are still in shock around here.
Isn’t it amazing, though, that the anti’s on FR just could not resist the temptation to trash our faith during this time?
But my point is that some of these proxy baptisms are done on behalf of murderers, are they not?
And I know in the 19th century, Mormon rebaptism was heavily stressed (I'm not just talking about a Mormon convert being baptized in a Mormon church, but Mormons themselves undergoing more than one Mormon baptism as a sign of repentance or whatever)
Therefore, this Central CA murderer, still on the roles of the Mormon church as a member, could not his family have him "rebaptized" by proxy...and he could reinstate his "Mormonism" on the other side?
I remember when President Hinckley died. I had to report abuse several times which made me think of the Scripture: “Mourn with those who mourn . . .” This is what true Christians are supposed to do.
You will know them by their fruit. Pretty obvious, isn’t it?

So, ya mean the Lds church recalled its missionaries from the region around the East Texas town of Dangerfield when a man killed 5 & wounded 10 in a Baptist church in 1980?
Or the Lds church recalled its missionaries from Ft. Worth, TX, in 1999 when a gunman killed eight and wounded almost as many in a Baptist church there?
Or the Lds church recalled its missionaries from Colorado Springs, CO, when a gunman killed several there 3 years ago?
I mean, after all, Marion G. Romney, part of the Lds First Presidency (highest hierarchy in the church) said one of the four key parts of Lds missionary discussion training with "prospects" was for Lds missionaries to proclaim all about the alleged "universal apostate" status of All Christian sects -- coupled with the alleged "restoration."
Wouldn't it have been highly insensitive, Saundra, on the part of Lds missionaries to go door to door, ringing doorbells following all of those tragic shootings, and talk about Christians as if they were "apostates?" So, hearing this comment of yours, you must be telling me that the Lds church must have stopped proclaiming what it believed to be true for months on end in each of these communities post-shooting. Right?
Right?

What? Where do you get that?
Scott Trotter, spokesperson for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints release this statement yesterday:
Kenneth James Ward was a former member of the Church who resigned his membership in 2004.
He was excommunicated decades ago, came back to full fellowship, then resigned his membership over 5 years ago.
How does that make him “still on the rolls” of the church?

According to court documents, Ward was ordered to stay away from members of the Mormon church, including a church located at 731 El Vista Avenue in Stanislaus County.
Ward’s brother, Mike Ward, told a newspaper that his brother did not know Clay Sannar, a church leader in Visalia whom Ward is accused of fatally shooting Sunday morning. Mike Ward went on to say his brother had been shunned by the Mormon church at one time.
Well I know the Church does not shun but if someone wants to do you harm one should stay far way and no provoke them!

How, exactly, did this man — who did not know the shooter — “provoke” his murder?
If you get a response that is logical or reasoned or even coherent ping me.
