Visalia, Calif. A Mormon church official was shot dead between services on Sunday, and less than an hour later, the man suspected of the crime also died after a shootout with police.
Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Visalia, southeast of Fresno, died after being shot in his office, said Visalia police chief Colleen Mestas.
Soon after the first shooting, a caller identified himself to police as the shooter. Police responded, and there was a confrontation with several shots exchanged, said Mestas.
The suspect was hit multiple times. He was taken to nearby Kaweah Delta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified yet. No officers were injured, Mestas said.
Tulare County sheriffs deputies are taking over the investigation of the shootout involving the police officers. The sheriffs department did not immediately return calls for comment.
Visalia police continue to investigate Sannars shooting, but have not identified a motive.

The guys with MDS are irrational and have limited critical thinking skills...they often show paranoid tendencies and see Mormons lurking on every virtual street corner, trying to convert the world to their particular Christian sect. Their brand of religious bigotry is bad for conservatism and must be fought at all times...magritte
You should have added ..."from his old childhood Ward." It makes you wonder what happened there in his Mormon Ward, that made this man would carry a vendetta for 30 years. Crazy or not, this man was haunted by his Mormonism.
“but you are just a rube, a pawn in the LDS game,”
Funny. I thought this thread was about the young Bishop who was murdered. The killer was an anti Mormon who was mentally ill.
I am proud of my Church for the way they are responding to this tragedy - with love and forgiveness and concern for everyone.
“the suspect is somebody who’s attended a Mormon church in the past, and has since felt ‘shunned to hell?’”
Turns out the killer was an anti Mormon who DEMANDED that his name be removed from the LDS roles. Furthermore, he was mentally ill.
The young Bishop died a hero. His dying words were to tell everyone to get out of the building. “One good man.”
The Church has responded with love, compassion, forgiveness, and kindness. I am very proud to be a member of this Church which has Jesus Christ at the Head.
That's a shocking accusation. Please sustantiate it or withdraw it.
Is there an argument in all that name-calling?
In case you didn't notice, in one paragraph, you have exhibited just about all the negative traits that you've accused your theological opponents of committing. The irony here is incredible.
“your inane ramblings really are out of place. “
This thread is about an innocent young Bishop who was murdered in cold blood by a mentally ill anti Mormon. That is the truth; not inane rambling.
“Jesus is the Lord.” This is what I believe.
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost 1 Corinthians 12:3
“This “hostility” to those who leave is the mark of a cult.”
As usual, you take what is said and twist it 180 degrees to suit your purposes.
I said it is human to avoid those who are hostile to everything you hold sacred. This “hostility” is not “to” those who leave. The hostility I was talking about is “from” those who leave.
This brand of “hostility” — not being able to leave and just leave it alone, but singlemindedly trying to convince anyone who will listen that you are smarter than those who remain — is a sign of extreme narcissism or mental illness.
There’s a follow-up story in today’s Fresno Bee that is very revealing about what transpired on that fateful day and before.
The killer was a mentally ill anti Mormon. The Bishop died a hero that day. The Church is responding with love, forgiveness, caring and Light of Christ.
The killer was a mentally ill anti Mormon who demanded that his name be stricken from the LDS roles several years ago.
Oh, wait, you agreed with that too.
Quit while you are behind, I am embarrassed for you.
MOLON LABE
Some of your Mormon cohorts (Lady Lawyer, Magritte, Reno232) have really revealed themselves this morning and it has not been pretty. This statement you have made is potentially just as ugly. How about some clarification about your conclusions? Was the man's mental illness shown by the murder? Or was the man's mental illness shown by his anti-Mormon views? Or was the man's mental illness shown by his demands to have his name removed from the LDS roles?
Please answer these questions and then you can follow ejonesie's advice if you like.
“It makes you wonder what happened there in his Mormon Ward, that made this man would carry a vendetta for 30 years. Crazy or not, this man was haunted by his Mormonism. “
When this story first broke, a mormonite posted it, apparently to show how mormons were so very persecuted in every way and were victims. Other mormonic cultists jumped in to try to extend that meme to make it sound as if all opposition to mormonism as a doctrine leads to violence.
It was done entirely through supposition, innuendo, sliming statements without facts, etc. Reno used innuendo in his post to imply violence has either been approved or endorsed by those who oppose mormonism as a doctrine. He was asked for proof. I didn’t see any. Lady Lawyer implied it was someone on FR who did the shooting, when she asked Reno what the shooter’s FR screen name is. Again, innuendo and slime without fact. I would imagine a lawyer would do better. I wonder if that user is a lady or a lawyer?
It must be terribly disappointing for them to learn it was the impact of mormonic abuse on this man (who was a victim of mormonism earlier in life) that eventually led to the shooting of the mormon bishop.
There is no question mormons shun anyone who dares leave and question mormonism. I’ve seen it. It’s been stated here by mormons who left.
“...this man was haunted by his Mormonism.”
mormon lying-for-the-lord is alive and well I see.
Openly empathizing with the killer. Interesting. And predictable. Which is why I made my comment in the first place.
“The killer was a mentally ill anti Mormon. The Bishop died a hero that day.”
Wow. Skewed to blazes!
The killer was a former mormon, who was abused by mormons as a child and never recovered from the abuse - even 30 years later. I wonder what they did to him?
The bishop died as an innocent man. Apparently, the shooter went back to his old childhood where the abuse happened and took revenge.
Two terrible tragedies all wrapped together.
Your compassion for one victim and lack of compassion for the one abused by mormonism is striking, Saundra.
But we know, you love your church and it can’t do any wrong, as you’ve posted here many times.
“Openly empathizing with the killer.”
I am openly empathizing with an abused former mormon and a mormon bishop.
I am sad for the tragedy of BOTH.
Still waiting for a shred of evidence, so-called-lawyer, that would show a FR person was the shooter... where is it?
Both his father and his brother have said there was no “abuse.” Again. Making excuses for a cold blooded killer.
